Position Summary

The Culinary teacher is responsible for instruction and kitchen supervision in the HS classroom designed to fulfill
students’ maximum potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Teachers will enable students
to develop competencies and skills that will prepare them for success in higher education and careers.

Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities

1. Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the district’s curriculum program,
reflect accommodations for learning style differences, and show written evidence of preparation as
required.

2. Present content according to the guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies,
and administrative regulations.

3. Work with other staff members to determine instructional goals, objectives and methods according to
district requirements.

4. Work with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students as
identified in Individual Education Plans (IEP).

5. Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
6. Plan and monitor workflow of instructional assistants and volunteers as appropriate.
7. Plan with ESL teachers to support ELL students with mastery of content knowledge.
8. Administer safety exams prior to allowing students to work with equipment/resources in the commercial

kitchen.
9. Provide instruction throughout the year to support student achievement.
10. Analyze performance data to provide target instructions based on students’ individual needs.
11. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
12. Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits.
13. Administer industry certification exam(s) and provide dual credit aligned to content knowledge as

applicable.
14. Establish partnerships with industry partners to support student opportunities for job shadowing,

internships, and certifications.
15. Manage the culinary lab, equipment, and classroom for sanitation, safety, and as a professional business

that provides services to clients.

16. Performs other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilities

expected for this position.

Minimum Requirements

TAC 233.14(f)(1) requires that candidates seeking CTE certification based on skill and experience must

complete an approved educator preparation program (EPP)

Current Licensure by a state or nationally recognized accrediting agency in any approved occupations

for the classes being taught. *Must maintain certification/licensure in the area in which you are
teaching, if applicable*

Valid Texas Teaching Certificate with required endorsements for subject and level assigned or

• Option I (Option)

o Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
o 2+ years of full-time wage-earning experience within the past ten years in an approved

occupation for the classes you will be teaching or
• Option II:

o Associate degree from an accredited college or university
o 2+ years of full-time wage-earning experience within the past ten years in an approved

occupation for the classes you will be teaching or
• Option III:

o High School diploma or GED recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting
agency.

o 5+ years of full-time wag-earning experience within the past ten years in an approved occupation
for the classes you will be teaching

Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee

(approximately $50.00) paid by the employee

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge and skills in Culinary Arts programs
Knowledge of large commercial kitchen equipment
Knowledge of culinary budgeting
Knowledge of technology and industry-related software
Ability to align Culinary Arts curriculum and instruction to industry certification exams
Knowledge of project-based learning programs
Ability to promote the Culinary Arts program to students, staff, parents, and the business community
Strong organizational, marketing, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to adjust and adapt to a multitude of situations in the school environment

Working Conditions

Work Environment:

Computer, computer software programs and peripherals, teacher resource materials and

equipment, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position.

Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise. Occasional

exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.

Physical Demands/Requirements:

Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions/deadlines and prolonged or

irregular hours; Frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing; Occasional: Lifting

and carrying 10-25 pounds frequently, 25-40 pounds occasionally, more than 45 pounds infrequently with
assistance; Pushing/pulling 10-35 pounds sporadically; May be required under specific circumstances to
provide physical restraint of students in danger of causing harm to themselves or others; Frequent
districtwide and occasional statewide travel.

Supervisory Responsibilities / Direct Reports

• Supervise students in classroom and kitchen lab and monitor workflow of instructional assistants as

appropriate
