Position Overview
The International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) provides evidence-based breastfeeding and infant feeding support to families throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period.
This position delivers individualized lactation consultations, facilitates breastfeeding education, supports hospital and community partnerships, and collaborates with Latched Support's multidisciplinary team to improve maternal and infant health outcomes.
The IBCLC serves as a clinical expert in breastfeeding and infant feeding while helping families overcome feeding challenges, achieve their breastfeeding goals, and access ongoing education and support. This role may provide services in office, hospital, community, virtual, and home settings depending on organizational needs.

Key ResponsibilitiesLactation Consultation & Clinical Care
- Provide individualized prenatal and postpartum lactation consultations.
- Assess breastfeeding and infant feeding concerns using evidence-based practices.
- Develop individualized feeding plans to support family goals.
- Assess infant feeding effectiveness, positioning, latch, milk transfer, and milk supply.
- Assist families with common breastfeeding challenges including nipple pain, low milk supply, oversupply, engorgement, pumping, bottle feeding, and returning to work.
- Educate families on breast pump use, flange fitting, milk storage, and pumping plans.
- Make appropriate referrals when medical concerns fall outside the IBCLC scope of practice.
Parent Education
- Facilitate breastfeeding classes and educational workshops.
- Support educational baby showers and community events.
- Provide breastfeeding education using culturally responsive, family-centered approaches.
- Assist with development and review of educational materials and curriculum.
- Promote evidence-based infant feeding practices.
Program Collaboration
- Collaborate with doulas, nurses, Community Health Workers, Resource Navigators, and Family Support Specialists to provide coordinated care.
- Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions when appropriate.
- Support continuity of care from pregnancy through the postpartum period.
- Assist with implementation of new maternal-child health initiatives.
Hospital & Community Partnerships
- Support hospital-based maternal and infant health initiatives.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers and referral partners.
- Represent Latched Support at community outreach events.
- Help strengthen referral relationships with physicians, hospitals, birth centers, pediatric providers, and community organizations.
Documentation & Compliance
- Complete timely and accurate documentation for all client encounters.
- Maintain required records according to organizational policies.
- Protect client confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements.
- Assist with program data collection and grant reporting.
- Maintain current IBCLC certification and continuing education requirements.
Quality Improvement
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
- Stay current on breastfeeding research and clinical best practices.
- Support clinical protocol development when requested.
- Assist with evaluating program outcomes and identifying opportunities for improvement.
Additional Responsibilities
- Participate in staff meetings and organizational trainings.
- Assist with special projects and new program initiatives.
- Support other maternal-child health activities as assigned.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications
- Current International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) credential in good standing.
- Minimum two years of clinical lactation experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of breastfeeding physiology, infant feeding, and lactation management.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to educate and support families from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong documentation and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Dietitian (RD), Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), Occupational Therapist (OT), or other maternal-child health credential preferred but not required.
- Experience working in hospital, outpatient, nonprofit, or community health settings.
- Experience teaching group education.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.
- Experience supporting medically complex breastfeeding situations.
- Experience with telehealth services.
Additional RequirementsBackground Check
Must successfully pass DFPS, DPS, and NSOPW background screenings.
Work Hours & Travel
Schedule may include evenings, weekends, community events, and hospital visits based on organizational needs. Reliable transportation required for travel throughout the San Antonio area.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds and provide hands-on lactation support, including assisting with infant positioning and breastfeeding techniques.
Work Environment & Safety
Work may occur in offices, hospitals, community centers, healthcare facilities, client homes, virtual settings, and community events. Employees must comply with organizational safety policies, HIPAA regulations, infection prevention protocols, and confidentiality requirements.
