Full Job Description

Construction Laborer

This is a skilled/unskilled position requiring an understanding of construction and roadways. Laborer needs to be experienced in the following equipment but not limited to, shovels, rakes, sledge hammers, concrete rakes, early entry concrete saws, etc. Laborers will be required to assist in cleaning concrete plants, pavers, equipment. Laborer must have knowledge of grade, elevation and stabilizing of subgrades for concrete placement. Laborer must be able to operate company equipment in a safe and drug free manner. Laborer must be able to keep a level head under stressful conditions and work overtime when required. This position requires day to day interaction with other employees. Contribute to the Team effort for success by working wherever they are needed when they are available.

Requirements

· Able to work in all kinds of weather conditions in order to maintain a safe and productive work site i.e. excessive heat, cold and precipitation

· Able to give and receive clear and concise directions to the other employees

· Able to react to unexpected problems that require a “Plan B” approach using different approaches based on getting the job done with what is available at the time and place

· Able to complete jobs from start to finish

· Able to anticipate problems on the job before they happen in order to avoid wasted time and materials

· Understand concrete placement, and work and labor associated with concrete roadway construction.

· Provide labor/assistance with all aspects of our construction needs.

· Operate equipment safely and efficiently.

· Inspect/maintain/clean equipment.

· Keep required records and logs

· Assist in the cleaning of equipment, concrete plants, pavers, etc.

· Ability to assist with grade stakes using hammers, pins, string line.

· Knowledge of concrete and other heavy equipment.

· Knowledge road construction materials, road construction processes and industry requirements.

· Understanding of computerized controls and electronics.

· Operate other heavy equipment and other construction related duties as required.

· Must have a satisfactory work history record.

· Able to maintain confidentiality and be above reproach with regards to all V.K. Knowlton Construction and Utilities, Inc. matters

Reporting Relationships

· Laborer- Machine Operator to the Foreman

Responsibilities

· Ensure all required paperwork and conditions are met and followed as designed

· Communicate only essential information required outside of the office and maintain complete confidentiality on all V.K. Knowlton Construction and Utilities, Inc. data

· Operate all equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.

· Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment.

· Must be available to report to work with at any time during their assigned shift, to work irregular hours in stressful situations and to report on time

· Must not use any drugs or substances that would interfere with the ability to drive safely.

· Strictly adhere to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.

· Have the willingness to work in a team environment and assist co–workers or supervisors with other duties as required.

· Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and / or MSHA.

· Must have a valid driver’s license to drive a company vehicle.

· Must be capable of working independently without constant supervision.

· Position blocks and ties rope around items to secure cargo for transport.

· Cleans, inspects, and services vehicle.

· Operates equipment on vehicle to load, unload, or disperse cargo or materials.

· Must understand and be able to implement safe efficient load handling and lifting procedures.

· Must be able to perform the work required in a timely manner and maintain adequate production

Duties

· Able to run other pieces of equipment and perform as needed on the job in other positions

· He or she must also make allowances when the weather and/or visibility is poor.

· Conducts a thorough pre-trip inspection of the equipment assigned by the company.

· Report all accidents or incidents involving driver of company equipment.

· Be able to provide initial contact with public safety or law enforcement officials and the general public when involved in traffic accidents or hazardous material incidents.

· Comprehends and complies with required emergency responses to hazardous material spills or incidents as required by the situation.

· Must be able to accurately and efficiently perform the mathematical calculations necessary to do the work including; determination of hours of service, computation of time and mileage.

· Must possess good judgment to perform the functions of the job and communicate professionally with those persons with whom the employee will be in contact as a company representative.
