Full Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

The primary purpose of this position is to positively affect patient outcomes by providing, coordinating, and supporting evidence-based direct patient care across the continuum of care. The highest quality of patient care and the appropriate use of resources are achieved in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.

KEY FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES include:

Assist with the planning, directing, and supervising of the overall nursing team and care within the infusion suite to include scheduling, check-out, patient triage, and verification of physician directed orders
Administer chemotherapy, hydration and other medications under the direction and supervision of physicians
Mixing of chemotherapy, hydration, and other medications as needed, in the absence of a Pharmacy Technician
Document as required within the EMR all treatment and nursing assessments
Set goals and long-range plans for infusion suite
RN must lead others (co-workers, patients, families, significant others) to where they need to be in order to meet the demands of the patient’s future care needs. Organize and prioritize work of patient care team. Perform procedures in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner. Complete assigned duties in an efficient and timely manner. Assure continuity of care as patient’s transition across the continuum of care through appropriate discharge planning, patient education and coordination of services. Practice autonomously within the scope of professional nursing practice. Participate in meeting the educational needs of self and others. Complete projects and other duties as assigned. Implement changes to achieve identified team goals.
Maintain a comprehensive understanding of the role of professional nursing in the institution that is demonstrated in the relationships with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members. Accountable for the management and provision of patient care on assigned area(s). Utilize critical thinking skills to recognize and solve patient problems. Identify the age specific growth and developmental needs of the patients and utilize the nursing process and nursing standards to prevent and/or manage actual/potential problems. Act as a patient and family advocate in order to uphold patient rights. Demonstrate clinical competency and compassion in providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures and managing emergencies. Identify and assess patient's needs for nursing care and other services. Collaborate with physicians, other services, patient and patient's family to plan care and evaluate outcomes. Train, coach and assist team members to ensure optimum patient care and efficient use of resources. Functions in related roles as required (e.g. charge nurse, preceptor, clinical coach, etc.).
Delegate to other health care team members professionally and appropriately.
Integrate research-based findings into daily patient care practices. Improve practice by integrating results and theories of research studies. Participate in and lead evidence-based practice projects. Participate in the redesign of care delivery for unit/center patient population.
Seek solutions to problems within our clinical system. Act on behalf of the patients and family to ensure care that is safe and appropriate with consideration for values, diversity, and human rights. Ensure integration of safety and quality standards into practice and delivery of team care. Minimize at-risk behavior in self and others. Actively utilize incident reporting system. Collaborate with others in quality and performance improvement efforts. Document care according to established standards. Participate in nursing and medical research and facilitates transfer of new knowledge to patient care. Participate in the Quality Improvement Process.
Provide training/education to Chemo staff as needed
Maintain skills in CPR and other emergency techniques and initiate as necessary.
Maintain annual TB testing.
Maintain open lines of communication with physicians and consult with them about medical care, policies, and procedures and any flow changes that may be needed to improve the processes if needed.
Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Associates Degree or Bachelor of Science degree in nursing

License/Certification

Current license to practice professional nursing (RN)

Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification

Preferred: Oncology Certified Nurse. Clinical Research Professional Certification

Experience

Minimum 3-5 years RN experience or similar experience deemed acceptable by the hiring manager.

Preferred: 3 years oncology nurse experience in a busy clinical environment

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, research protocol guidelines, and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports and professional correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of physicians and employees.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret charts and graphs.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills

Proficiency working within Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, to include the creation of presentations, charts, graphs, and workbooks containing formulas and complex data sets. Preferred experience working within an EMR system.

LOCATIONS

This position requires employees to work at multiple locations according to a fixed weekly schedule.
