Job Summary

The County of San Diego is currently seeking qualified candidates for:

SHERIFF'S LICENSING CLERK I

Selected candidates will be hired at Step 1 $43,576.00 of the salary range. County employees are subject to the County Promotion Rule for Step Placement in Accordance with Compensation Ordinance 1.3.5.

Future Salary Increases

** June 2027 – 4.73% increase to base pay (3.00% Across-the-Board + 1.73% Market Adjustment)

The following additional pay incentives and premiums are available:

An additional 5% Sheriff's Training Premium of the base rate for time actually spent providing on the job training.

As a Sheriff's Licensing Clerk I, you will be conducting face-to-face interviews with a wide spectrum of individuals, including law enforcement professionals, business owners, and applicants with varied personal histories, to determine eligibility for regulatory business licenses and permits. This role involves conducting background checks on applicants for required criminal registrations, which include direct physical contact to photograph, fingerprint, and perform DNA samples via mouth swabs. Sheriff's Licensing Clerk I's also have extensive contact with the general public, are responsible for interpreting and applying federal, state and county codes, and are privy to highly sensitive information.

Hiring Process and Timeline:
The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below.

Conditional Job Offer and Background Process begins: Shortly after the interviews. Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.
Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of the background process or other mutually agreed upon date.

Minimum Qualification:

One (1) year of full-time, progressively responsible clerical experience, OR;
Six (6) months of clerical experience and the completion of twelve (12) semester/ sixteen (16) quarter units of Criminal Justice classes.

Note:
Positions may involve necessary and timely transportation for field travel, requiring the ability to arrange transportation to different worksites, meetings, or field work.

Background Qualifications:
Must have reputation for being honest and trustworthy. Felony convictions will be disqualifying. Misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency. Prior to appointment, candidates will be subject to a thorough background investigation which may include psychological, truth verification, or other examination or test.

Evaluation:
The names of qualified applicants will be placed on a six (6) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment and supplemental applications.
