ROLE SUMMARY

Paint & Coating Chemist

San Diego, CA

Reports to: Technical Director

FLSA Status: Full-Time Exempt

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

About the Position

As a Paint & Coatings Chemist, you will conduct physical and chemical evaluations on raw materials and finished goods to ensure they align with our internal specifications. Your core objective is to develop and manage processes for inspection, testing, and improvement, ensuring that our specialty coating systems maintain their high standards through precise formulation and accurate color matching.

Work Environment

This is a full-time, onsite role based at our San Diego headquarters. Standard operating hours are 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, though you may be required to work overtime to meet production goals and business demands.

Core Responsibilities

Develop and execute protocols for process improvement, inspection, and testing to ensure full compliance with safety and material standards.
Take ownership of quality plans and testing methodologies to help maintain consistent product excellence across all manufacturing lines.
Collaborate with external suppliers and customers to resolve quality concerns and implement effective corrective measures.
Create and refine product formulations as requested by the Technical Director or leadership.
Conduct cost-analysis studies to identify opportunities for efficiency without compromising our high-quality standards.
Prepare and deliver educational materials regarding quality protocols and best practices.
Support the Technical Director or Plant Manager with necessary process certifications.
Perform precise color adjustments for production batches to ensure custom color accuracy and maintain detailed records.
Analyze quality data to generate reports that help the team make informed adjustments and improvements.
Provide management with updates regarding quality trends, losses, and potential issues.
Participate in both internal and external quality audits.
Maintain a tidy and efficient laboratory space that adheres to all safety and manufacturing guidelines.
Complete additional tasks as required.

Required Qualifications & Skills

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field, with a solid grasp of analytical and organic chemistry.
Proficiency in coating laboratory techniques and synthetic chemistry.
A flexible mindset capable of managing shifting priorities and multiple demands.
A self-driven approach with strong interpersonal skills to thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced setting.
Ability to clearly communicate findings through presentations and daily reports.
Competence in interpreting manufacturing and lab documentation, including SOPs and quality standards.
Strong mathematical aptitude and analytical skills to help the team prioritize safety while multitasking effectively.
Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
Capacity to work both independently and as a contributing member of a team.

Working Conditions

You will operate within a manufacturing and laboratory setting, with routine exposure to chemical products and bulk paint. The facility may experience varying temperatures based on external weather, and you may encounter minor levels of dust. Please be aware that production areas can occasionally be humid, loud, or experience temperature extremes typical of a manufacturing plant.
