About the Role
We are a San Diego-based IT consulting and managed services firm supporting biotechnology, life sciences, and other growing organizations with their technology, cybersecurity, cloud, and AI needs.
We are looking for an experienced, highly autonomous Senior Technology Consultant – Biotech & Life Sciences who can take ownership of sophisticated client environments and projects from initial discussion through successful completion.
This is not a traditional help desk or narrowly defined engineering position. We need someone who combines strong hands-on technical ability with excellent communication, project ownership, business judgment, and executive presence.
The right person will be equally comfortable configuring and securing a Microsoft 365 tenant, implementing cloud and cybersecurity solutions, deploying enterprise AI platforms, solving an end user’s technical problem, and participating in a technology strategy meeting with a CEO, CFO, or other senior executive.
Most importantly, we are looking for someone who can be trusted with an objective rather than simply a list of instructions. Once a project or responsibility is handed off, you should be comfortable determining what needs to happen, coordinating the necessary people and resources, communicating with the client, resolving obstacles, and seeing the work through to completion.
What You’ll Do
· Design, configure, migrate, administer, and secure Microsoft 365 environments.
· Assess existing Microsoft 365 tenants and implement security and configuration best practices.
· Configure identity, authentication, access controls, endpoint security, email security, data protection, and related Microsoft cloud services.
· Lead onboarding and technology implementation projects for new clients.
· Deploy and administer enterprise AI platforms, including OpenAI and Anthropic/Claude solutions.
· Help clients establish secure and practical approaches to adopting generative AI within their organizations.
· Work directly with client executives and leadership teams to understand business requirements and translate them into appropriate technology solutions.
· Lead projects independently from initial requirements gathering through implementation, documentation, client communication, and completion.
· Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues across Microsoft 365, endpoints, networking, cloud services, security platforms, and SaaS applications.
· Assist end users when necessary and communicate technical concepts clearly to people with widely varying levels of technical expertise.
· Evaluate new technologies and make practical recommendations based on client needs rather than simply recommending the newest product.
· Coordinate with vendors and other service providers on behalf of clients.
· Maintain clear technical documentation and communicate project status, risks, and recommendations without requiring constant oversight.
· Identify potential technology, security, or operational issues before they become problems.
What We’re Looking For
This is a senior role, and we are looking for someone with substantial real-world experience rather than someone who simply holds a collection of certifications.
· Significant experience administering and securing Microsoft 365 environments.
· Strong knowledge of Microsoft Entra ID, Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, MFA, Conditional Access, identity management, and related Microsoft cloud technologies.
· Strong understanding of modern cybersecurity principles and their practical application in small and mid-sized organizations.
· Experience managing endpoints, SaaS applications, cloud services, networking, and general business IT environments.
· Experience deploying or administering enterprise generative AI platforms such as OpenAI/ChatGPT Business or Enterprise and Anthropic Claude.
· Excellent troubleshooting skills and the ability to work across technologies rather than being limited to a single specialty.
· Demonstrated experience independently managing technical projects through completion.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
· The ability to communicate comfortably and professionally with executives, scientists, technical teams, vendors, and end users.
· Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
· The judgment to know when to make a decision independently and when an issue genuinely needs escalation.
· A strong sense of ownership and accountability.
Biotech / Life Sciences Experience
Experience supporting biotechnology, pharmaceutical, medical device, life sciences, or similar organizations is strongly preferred.
We especially value candidates who understand that the technology needs of a biotech company change significantly as the company progresses from early-stage research through growth, clinical development, partnerships, financing, acquisition, or preparation to become a public company.
Familiarity with the security, compliance, confidentiality, collaboration, and operational expectations common within life sciences organizations is a significant advantage.
The Person We’re Looking For
Technical skills are important, but this position requires more than technical ability. We’re looking for someone who:
· Takes genuine ownership of their work.
· Does not require constant follow-up to keep a project moving.
· Notices what needs to be done and takes appropriate action.
· Communicates proactively when something changes or a problem arises.
· Can walk into an executive meeting and represent our company professionally.
· Is comfortable making recommendations and explaining the reasoning behind them.
· Can move between strategic discussions and hands-on technical work without hesitation.
· Treats client environments and information with appropriate discretion and care.
· Understands that solving the client’s business problem is ultimately more important than simply completing a technical task.
· Enjoys working in a small organization where individual contributions have a meaningful impact.
If you prefer highly structured environments where every task is assigned, documented, and closely managed by someone else, this probably will not be the right fit. If you enjoy being trusted to take responsibility for an outcome and figure out how to get there, we would like to talk with you.
Location
This position can be performed remotely, and we will consider exceptional candidates anywhere in the United States.
Candidates located in the San Diego / Southern California area are preferred, as there may occasionally be opportunities to work directly with local clients, attend meetings, or assist with onsite projects.
Engagement & Compensation
· Contract-to-hire opportunity.
· $75–$100 per hour, depending on experience and capabilities.
· Flexible remote work.
· Potential for a long-term relationship for the right person.
The initial engagement will allow both sides to determine whether there is a strong long-term fit.
How to Apply
Please submit your resume along with a brief introduction describing your experience with:
· Microsoft 365 administration and security.
· Managing technical projects independently.
· Working directly with executives or senior client leadership.
· Biotechnology, pharmaceutical, life sciences, or similarly demanding client environments.
· Enterprise AI platforms such as OpenAI/ChatGPT and Anthropic Claude.
We’re particularly interested in hearing about a project or client environment that you personally took ownership of: what you inherited, what needed to be accomplished, what challenges you encountered, and how you brought it across the finish line.
Pay: $100,000.00 - $200,000.00 per year
Application Question(s):
- Describe the first five things you would review in a newly inherited Microsoft 365 tenant to assess its security posture. What would you consider a critical finding?
A biotech CEO tells you, “We need to be secure, but I don’t want security slowing the company down.” How would you respond and how would you turn that statement into an actionable technology plan?
You are asked to roll out ChatGPT or Claude to a biotech client. What would you evaluate and put in place before enabling broad employee access?
What changes in IT priorities would you expect as a biotech company moves from an early research-stage startup toward clinical development, major partnerships, acquisition, or becoming a public company?
