Full Job Description

Position Overview

The Lab Engineering Technician will provide critical technical support to cross-functional engineering teams in a fast-paced hardware development and testing environment. This role demands a highly hands-on professional responsible for prototype assembly, component-level printed circuit board (PCB) rework, hardware debugging, and executing test programs. The ideal candidate possesses strong electromechanical troubleshooting skills, fluency with precision measurement and assembly tools, and an analytical mindset required to diagnose hardware anomalies side-by-side with senior design engineers.

Key Responsibilities

Hardware Assembly & Prototyping: Build, assemble, and integrate complex electromechanical subsystems, reference devices, test fixtures, racks, and chassis utilizing engineering blueprints, schematics, and technical wiring diagrams.
PCB Rework & Soldering: Prepare, load, and perform high-precision manual soldering and desoldering on printed circuit assemblies (PCAs), including surface-mount technology (SMT) and through-hole component-level repairs/modifications.
Testing & Hardware Debugging: Set up specialized test fixtures, execute automated and manual test programs, and perform initial isolation and component-level troubleshooting of hardware test failures.
Cable & Wire Harness Fabrication: Build, crimp, pin, and insulate custom wire harnesses and cable assemblies from scratch based on structural requirements.
SMT & Equipment Support: Assist with basic setups, program adjustments, or product loading transitions on SMT machine placement equipment lines when necessary.
Lab Environment Maintenance: Operate and maintain common lab assets, calibration platforms, and precision hand tools (micrometers, calipers, heat guns, crimpers, specialized meters). Ensure structural material inventories remain fully organized to support aggressive project timelines.
Documentation & Data Integrity: Carefully record and log system failure data, repair methodologies, and test results into internal databases to support engineering optimization loops.

Required Qualifications & Experience

Education: Associate’s degree (A.S.) in Electronic Technology, Manufacturing Technology, or a highly related engineering/technical discipline. (Equivalent cumulative hands-on laboratory experience from deep technical/academic engineering programs will be reviewed for equivalence).
Experience: * 3+ years of professional or dedicated lab experience in electronic/mechanical assembly, hardware debugging, or hardware testing.
2+ years of verified bench experience utilizing precision hand tools, soldering irons, heat guns, and wire crimpers.
1+ years of direct experience fabrications wiring harnesses, cable connectors, or custom pin-outs.
Technical Skills: * Absolute proficiency in reading, interpreting, and working directly from technical schematics, wiring schematics, and mechanical assembly drawings.
Strong foundational knowledge of electronic component placement, orientation, and polarity constraints.
Demonstrated capability performing component-level troubleshooting and repair on damaged or failing PCBs.
Compliance: Familiarity with visual and manufacturing quality standards equivalent to IPC-A-610 guidelines.

Preferred (Nice-to-Have) Skills

Active tracking or completion of a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mechanical, Electrical, or Aerospace Engineering.
Active or prior IPC-A-610 or J-STD-001 soldering certifications.
Historical exposure working inside a Semiconductor, Radio Frequency (RF), or highly regulated hardware validation testing facility.
Experience editing or configuring SMT pick-and-place files or operating CNC/3D-printing equipment for modeling components.
Prior exposure to basic computer-aided design (CAD) software packages (e.g., Creo, SolidWorks) to review models.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

This is a 100% on-site laboratory environment requiring daily attendance at the San Diego, CA 92121 facility.
Must possess the manual dexterity needed to handle small, delicate electronic components under microscopes or magnifying stations.
Must be capable of lifting and transporting up to 25 lbs of test equipment safely around the lab layout.
Strong written and verbal communication skills to interface smoothly with cross-functional, multi-regional project teams.
