Full Job Description

Position Overview

We’re looking for an experienced Payroll Manager to own our weekly payroll function and serve as a trusted partner to HR, Operations, Finance, and field leadership. This role supports employees working across both public and private construction projects throughout California and is responsible for delivering an accurate, compliant payroll while leading certified payroll reporting, prevailing wage compliance, payroll auditing, and continuous process improvement.

What You’ll Do

As Payroll Manager, you’ll play an integral role in supporting employees, leaders, and the business through accurate, compliant, and efficient payroll operations.

Key responsibilities include:

Lead weekly payroll processing for employees across field and office operations supporting public and private construction projects throughout California.
Own the audit and validation of payroll data, timecards, labor allocations, job costing, and supporting documentation to ensure payroll accuracy before processing.
Prepare and submit California DIR Certified Payroll Reports while ensuring compliance with prevailing wage requirements.
Analyze employee work across public and private construction projects to validate wage classifications, labor allocations, and certified payroll reporting requirements.
Partner closely with HR, Operations, Finance, and field leadership to proactively resolve payroll questions and support accurate, timely payroll processing.
Leverage ADP Workforce Now to manage payroll processing, reporting, system administration, and ongoing payroll efficiencies.
Process payroll adjustments, benefit deductions, garnishments, and other payroll-related transactions with accuracy and discretion.
Prepare payroll reconciliations, reporting, and documentation to support audits and leadership reporting.
Strengthen payroll controls, reporting, and operational efficiencies through continuous improvement while supporting an established, well-run payroll function.
Maintain the highest level of confidentiality while providing exceptional service to all.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this role requires ownership, accountability, sound judgment, and a commitment to delivering an accurate, compliant payroll every week.

We’re looking for someone who enjoys understanding the story behind the numbers, thinks both strategically and analytically, asks thoughtful questions, and follows through to resolution.

The ideal candidate will have:

7+ years of progressive payroll experience, including ownership of California construction payroll from start to finish.
Extensive experience with California DIR Certified Payroll Reporting and prevailing wage compliance.
Strong knowledge of California wage and hour laws.
Advanced proficiency in ADP Workforce Now.
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, reporting, reconciliation, and data analysis.
Exceptional attention to detail with strong auditing, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Strong organizational skills with excellent follow-through and the ability to manage competing priorities.
Professional communication skills with the ability to build trusted relationships across HR, Operations, Finance, and field leadership.
A high level of ownership, accountability, professionalism, integrity, and discretion.
The ability to maintain strict confidentiality while exercising sound judgment.

Preferred Qualifications

Spanish speaking.
Experience supporting both public and private construction projects.
