Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial operations of the company, ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, and driving profitability through effective cost accounting and project-based financial management. This position plays a critical role in monitoring labor, material, and overhead costs for each project, providing management with timely and accurate financial information to support decision-making and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

· Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.

· Maintain the general ledger and ensure accuracy of all accounting records.

· Manage month-end and year-end closing processes.

· Monitor cash flow, banking relationships, and working capital requirements.

· Develop and maintain financial policies and procedures.

Manufacturing Cost Accounting

· Develop and maintain accurate product costing systems for cabinet manufacturing by using Innergry.

· Analyze labor, material, subcontractor, and overhead costs.

· Monitor manufacturing variances and identify opportunities for cost reduction.

· Maintain inventory valuation and oversee physical inventory counts.

· Establish and monitor standard costs for materials, labor, and production processes.

· Analyze production efficiency and profitability by department and project.

Project Costing & Budgeting

· Create and maintain project budgets for labor, materials, hardware, finishing, installation, and subcontractors through Innergy.

· Track actual costs against budget on a project-by-project basis.

· Analyze job profitability and provide variance reports to management.

· Work closely with Project Managers, Purchasing, Engineering, and Production departments to ensure accurate cost tracking.

· Identify projects at risk of exceeding budget and recommend corrective actions.

· Develop reporting systems that provide real-time visibility into project performance.

Labor & Productivity Analysis

· Monitor labor utilization and efficiency across departments.

· Track actual labor hours versus estimated labor hours for each project.

· Analyze production performance and identify trends affecting profitability.

· Develop labor cost forecasting models to support scheduling and workforce planning.

· Partner with operations leadership to establish labor benchmarks and productivity goals.

Material Management & Purchasing Controls

· Monitor material usage and material waste.

· Review purchasing practices and inventory turnover.

· Develop reporting to track material cost fluctuations and supplier performance.

· Assist in establishing inventory controls to minimize shortages and excess inventory.

· Support purchasing department with financial analysis and vendor evaluations.

Budgeting & Forecasting

· Lead annual budgeting process.

· Develop monthly financial forecasts.

· Analyze financial performance against budget.

· Provide recommendations to improve profitability, cash flow, and operational efficiency.

· Prepare executive-level financial reports and dashboards.

Leadership & Team Development

· Manage accounting personnel and develop department procedures.

· Train and mentor accounting staff.

· Create systems and processes that reduce dependency on individual employees.

· Ensure cross-training and documentation of accounting functions.

· Promote continuous improvement and accountability throughout the organization.

Qualifications

Education

· Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.

· CPA or CMA preferred.

Experience

· Minimum 5 years of accounting leadership experience.

· Manufacturing accounting experience required.

· Cabinet manufacturing, millwork, woodworking, furniture manufacturing, or custom manufacturing experience strongly preferred.

· Extensive experience with job costing and project-based accounting.

· Experience managing inventory and cost accounting systems.

Skills

· Strong understanding of manufacturing cost accounting.

· Advanced budgeting and forecasting abilities.

· Expertise in project profitability analysis.

· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

· Excellent leadership and communication abilities.

· Advanced proficiency in Excel and ERP/accounting systems.

· Ability to work closely with operations, purchasing, engineering, and production teams.

Success Metrics

The Controller will be evaluated based on:

· Accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting.

· Project profitability tracking and reporting.

· Labor budget versus actual performance.

· Material budget versus actual performance.

· Inventory accuracy.

· Cash flow management.

· Reduction of manufacturing variances.

· Improvement in gross profit margins.

· Development of scalable accounting systems and procedures.

· Own the project financial review process from estimate to final installation, ensuring every job has a projected gross profit, actual gross profit, and variance analysis before project closeout.

Compensation

Physical Requirements

· Prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer.

· Frequent use of hands and fingers to operate office equipment.

· Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and electronically.

· Occasionally required to stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift up to 15 pounds.

· Ability to walk through office, warehouse, and manufacturing areas as needed.

Work Environment

· Primarily works in an office located within a cabinet manufacturing facility.

· Occasionally enters warehouse and manufacturing areas where exposure to machinery, wood dust, noise, and varying temperatures may occur.

· Must follow all company safety policies and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) when entering production areas.

· May occasionally work extended hours to meet financial reporting, audit, or business deadlines.
