Position Overview:
The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Engineering Associate is responsible for supporting, developing, implementing, and maintaining environmental, health, and safety programs to ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations while promoting a strong culture of safety and environmental stewardship across the organization. This role involves hands-on operational support, program development, training, regulatory compliance, incident investigation, and emergency response coordination. The individual will work cross-functionally with multiple departments to identify and mitigate EHS risks, drive continuous improvement initiatives, and ensure a safe and healthy work environment for all employees.
Key Responsibilities:
Program Development & Implementation· Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of EHS programs, policies, and procedures including but not limited to:· Hazard Communication· Lockout/Tagout· Emergency Response· Waste Management· Ergonomics· Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)· Ensure EHS programs meet or exceed regulatory requirements and industry best practices.· Support implementation and maintenance of EHS management systems.
Compliance & Regulatory Reporting· Monitor compliance with applicable environmental, health, and safety regulations including OSHA, EPA, DOT, CUPA, and local fire codes.· Prepare and submit regulatory reports accurately and on time.· Maintain EHS documentation, permits, and regulatory records.· Support regulatory inspections, audits, and corrective action responses.· Generate safety metrics and reports including headcount, work hours, incidents, and inspection findings for Safety Committee and site leadership.· Maintain compliance with San Diego County HAZMAT regulations and CERS (California Environmental Reporting System).Risk
Assessment & Hazard Control· Conduct routine EHS inspections, audits, and risk assessments.· Identify hazards and non-compliance issues and implement corrective and preventative actions (CAPAs).· Perform Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).· Assist in developing safe work practices and hazard mitigation strategies.
Training & Safety Communication· Develop and deliver EHS training for new hires and current employees.· Promote awareness and engagement in safety initiatives.· Serve as a resource for employees and leadership regarding EHS practices and requirements.· Facilitate safety committee meetings and safety initiatives.
Incident Investigation & Emergency Response· Lead or participate in investigations involving accidents, injuries, near misses, spills, and environmental incidents.· Identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.· Maintain incident records and track injury and illness metrics such as DART and TRIR.· Coordinate and participate in emergency response activities including drills and real incidents.· Organize training and lead the site Emergency Response Team (ERT).
Hazardous & Biological Waste Management· Oversee hazardous, chemical, and biological waste management programs.· Ensure proper labeling, storage, transportation, and disposal of regulated waste.· Support spill response and chemical hazard management.· Maintain compliance with local HAZMAT regulations and reporting requirements.·
Continuous Improvement· Analyze EHS metrics and trends to identify improvement opportunities.· Stay current with evolving EHS regulations and industry standards.· Support continuous improvement initiatives across the EHS program.· Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: · Bachelor’s degree or certification in Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health & Safety, Professional Safety & Health Officer/Specialist, or a related field.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.· Minimum 5 years of experience in an EHS role, preferably in biotechnology, medical device, research, or manufacturing environments.· Strong experience managing hazardous chemical and biological waste programs.· Experience with chemical management, spill response, and waste disposal compliance.· Experience with San Diego County HAZMAT regulations and CERS reporting systems.· Experience working in laboratory and/or vivarium environments.· Experience with IACUC, animal care, and husbandry environments.· Demonstrated experience developing and implementing EHS programs.· Experience with regulatory compliance and reporting.· Knowledge, Skills & Abilities· Strong understanding of OSHA, EPA, DOT, and local regulatory requirements.· Proficiency conducting risk assessments, EHS audits, and incident investigations.· Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.· Excellent organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.· Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to deliver effective training.· Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).· Ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams.· Strong interpersonal and influencing skills.
Preferred Qualifications: · Experience with EHS management systems (ISO 14001, ISO 45001).· Training in Continuous Improvement methodologies such as 5S, Lean, or Six Sigma fundamentals.· Experience with EHS compliance software or databases.· First Aid / CPR / AED certification.· HAZWOPER certification.
