Summary: The Registered Nurse – Operating Room (OR) is responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care in the OR and PeriOperative services for all patient populations.

- Patient Care Duties:
- Performs professional intra-operative nursing care for patients to ensure a caring patient experience.
- Coordinates with other internal or external disciplines that are involved in providing patient care.
- Reviews inventory and stock levels of equipment and supplies before any procedures.
- Ensures patient safety and care through the coordination of surgical technologists and surgeons.
- Ensures patient safety through transportation, transferring, and positioning.
- Assists during patient induction and emergence.
- Completes appropriate medical records documentation and responds to patient requests for care.
- Administers medications safely and correctly.
- Communicates the patient’s current status to relevant parties throughout the continuum of care.
- Evaluates outcomes and adjusts nursing care processes as necessary in consultation with other nursing staff and physicians.
- Administers sedation analgesia under the direction of the attending physicians.
- Performs interventions necessary to ensure that the patient’s procedure is performed on the correct site, side, and level and to maintain the patient’s wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels.
- Performs interventions to maintain the status of the patient’s genitourinary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological systems, as well as fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balances, at or above baseline levels.
- Ensures the patient is at or returned to normothermia at the conclusion of the immediate postoperative period.
- Proactively protects the patient from surgical site infection.
- Follows the Wound Class guidelines to assign the appropriate classification to the type of surgery.
- Assesses the knowledge level of the patient or designated support person.
- Provides education regarding the expected responses to the operative or invasive procedure.
- Involves the patient or designated support person actively in decisions affecting the patient’s perioperative plan of care and rehabilitation process.
- Protects the patient’s rights, dignity, and privacy.
- Provides age-specific, culturally competent, and ethical care within legal standards of practice.
- Provides consistent and comparable care regardless of the setting.
- Assess patients in PreOp and assures all the Safety Checklists have been completed and documented, per policies and procedures.
- Develops an individualized perioperative patient plan of care.
- Safety and Infection Control Duties:
- Adheres to established MSSC and safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
- Strictly adheres to aseptic techniques using a variety of supplies and instruments while actively monitoring the environment to ensure a sterile technique is maintained throughout procedures.
- Enforces recommended standards and practices in support of infection control and anticipating breaks in sterile technique.
- Protects the patient from injury caused by extraneous objects and chemical, electrical, laser, mechanical, and thermal sources.
- Performs accounting procedures to protect the patient from unintended retained surgical items.
- Manages the patient’s specimens according to organizational policy and procedure.
Protects the patient from harm by following and implementing the Patient Safety Check and Universal Protocol Guidelines in the OR and reviewing every line for every patient.
- Ensures procedure safety and success by leading the team responsible for participating actively in the time-out process.
- Actively adheres to standard safety procedures regarding proper personal sanitation and hygiene.
- Completes employee and patient incident documentation in a timely manner while identifying potentially unsafe conditions.
- Demonstrates a complete understanding of established emergency procedures and provides appropriate support.

Qualifications: Successful individuals who perform the responsibilities of this position must perform their essential duties satisfactorily. Education:
- Required: Degree from an accredited school of nursing or a Registered Nurse (RN) Diploma.
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
Experience:
- Required: Three years of experience in perioperative services, with PeriOp 101 training or equivalent.
- Required: Completion of an accredited O.R. training program.
Licensure and Certification:
- Required: Advanced Cardiac Life Support – ACLS
- Basic Life Support Certification – BLS
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification– (PALS)
- Registered Nurse - State Licensure – RN.
- Preferred: Certified Nurse, Operating Room (CNOR) certification.
Language Skills: Must possess the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Writes routine reports and correspondence and speaks effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills: Must have the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume while applying concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability: Must possess the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions while interpreting a wide variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Healthcare Business Acumen: Must have the knowledge and be well-versed in the nuances and complexities of the business aspects of healthcare, including Protected Health Information (PHI) procedures and safeguarding other identifiable information regarding patient data.
Computer Skills: Must have knowledge of Internet software, Spreadsheet software, and Word Processing software.
