About Road Safety Inc.

Road Safety Inc. (RSI) is a California-based provider of traffic-control services for electric utilities and their prime contractors. We are committed to zero-incident performance and strict CAL/OSHA compliance across every work zone.

Position Overview

The Traffic Control Journeyman is a member of the operations team and is responsible for implementing the traffic control plan as designed and detailed by the Client. This position requires experience in the Traffic Control industry, and an understanding of the many variables that can affect a jobsite.

Key Responsibilities

Communicate and work with the Client and members of the traffic control team.
Plan, organize, and supervise all equipment and materials needed to set-up, take down, maintain traffic control, and handle traffic-related situations.
Understand work directions and communicate effectively with management and fellow employees.
Communicate with the public, answering questions and providing information about road closures, detours, and other traffic-related concerns.
The Journeyman will have due authority over all on-site employees and contractors performing activities of the work site.
Journeyman is to be on site during all hours of work where temporary traffic control is being utilized to direct traffic and/or when deliveries are being made to/from the job site.
Act as point of contact for all inspectors on all job sites associated with this permit for traffic/pedestrian control and hours of use of the right of way.
Coordinate temporary traffic control with other construction sites in the area to assure traffic/pedestrian safety and traffic flow.
Responsible for traffic control including emergency vehicle response procedures and ANY changes to controls based upon traffic flow, channelization, pedestrian needs, or other conditions.
Control site access points and all ingress and egress to and from the site including vehicle and equipment staging.
Monitor and ensure appropriate utilization of all approved off-site staging areas.
Implement and communicate changes to temporary traffic control set up to mitigate changing roadway/traffic conditions.
Coordinate with the Client, law enforcement, and emergency personnel to manage traffic control efforts effectively.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Valid state driver’s license without restrictions.
Pass a background and/or MVR check.
Pass a pre-employment drug screen.
Have transportation to and from the report location.
Be able to safely drive an approved company vehicle.
Be able to enter and exit a vehicle numerous times a day.
Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with the public, coworkers, and management.
Meet physical requirements and understand working conditions.
Must be able to work long hours and overtime during emergencies (including holidays, weekends, etc. Subject to call out work).
Have a current California State Flagger certification.
Be able to write, read and comprehend written and verbal job instructions/information.
Two years’ experience at the lead level or an equivalent combination of closely related training and experience.

Work Environment

May be required to work out of town for extended periods of time.
Work around hazardous equipment.
Work in proximity to energized power lines.
Work around excessive noise from machines and other equipment with hearing protection.
Work in all temperatures and weather and will be exposed to nature, i.e., irritating plants and biting or stinging insects, dust, etc.
Work on unlevel terrain.
Work on and around several types of roadways: Rural, Low volume, High volume, Highways, Freeways, and Expressways.

Physical Requirements

Standing for extended periods: Traffic control flaggers may spend the majority of their shift standing in place while directing traffic.
Working in various weather conditions: Traffic control flaggers may need to walk between different locations within the work zone, set up or remove traffic control devices, and communicate with client crews and other personnel.
Lifting and carrying equipment: Flaggers may need to lift, carry, and set up traffic control devices such as signs, cones, and barriers. This can involve handling equipment weighing up to 50 pounds or more.
Manual dexterity: Flaggers should have good hand-eye coordination to effectively use flags, hand signals, and other communication methods for directing traffic.
Good vision and hearing: Traffic control flaggers must be able to see and hear approaching vehicles, equipment, and coworkers to maintain a safe work environment.
Mobility: Flaggers may need to move quickly between different locations within the work zone, requiring the ability to walk, climb, and navigate uneven terrain.
Stamina and endurance: The physically demanding nature of the job requires flaggers to maintain their energy and focus throughout the workday.
Alertness and situational awareness: Traffic control flaggers must remain attentive and aware of their surroundings at all times to ensure the safety of pedestrians, motorists, and workers.

Authority

The employee signing this has the authority to carry out all of the above responsibilities without impairment of reference to supervision except in unusual circumstances.
The make a “judgement” call onsite regarding risk management.
To advise surrounding staff of any potentially dangerous situations.
