The Diet Technician supports clients throughout their daily activities in the program, with a primary focus on the nutritional components of treatment. Responsibilities include supervising and supporting clients during meals and snacks, modeling healthy eating by sharing meals with clients, and communicating clinical observations to the multidisciplinary treatment team.
Additional duties include facilitating a weekly nutrition education group, maintaining kitchen organization, inventory, and food safety standards, grocery shopping and managing the dietary budget, and collaborating with the treatment team to support clients' nutritional and recovery goals.
This is a full-time, 40-hour position
General Responsibilities
- Purchasing all grocery items for the facility, considering variety, special diets, and food safety
- Maintaining a well-stocked kitchen, and upholding proper sanitation requirements
- Monitoring client consumption of appropriate meals and providing supplementation for incomplete meals
- Cooking and baking with clients as therapeutically recommended by Dietitian
- Enforcing dietary program and supporting goals set by Dietitian
- Assisting in education for other staff onsite to ensure food safety and proper portioning of meals.
- Running nutrition focused educational groups
- Maintaining appropriate grocery budget
- Supporting clients in the milieu space during groups, down time, and meal times
- Support in completing documentation as required
- All other responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelors in Nutrition or related field
- Knowledge of nutrition and dietary interventions in the mental health field
- Experience in dietary education
- Ability to communicate with persons from all educational and cultural backgrounds
- Have strong written and verbal communication skills
- Must demonstrate initiative, resourcefulness, a professional manner, enthusiasm, and a non-judgmental attitude
- Be self-motivated and creative
- Ability to demonstrate understanding of the medical consequences of eating disorders, the hazards of re-feeding and how to avoid complications
- Must have the ability to provide documentation or obtain a state-required food handlers permit, or Serve Safe Certification, upon hire
Desired Qualifications
- Spanish proficiency
- Experience in the mental health field or working with individuals with different mental health disorders
- Knowledge of eating disorders
- CPR/BLS certification
