SHR Talent is partnering with a healthcare client in San Jose, CA in its search for a Director of Surgical Services. This permanent, onsite leadership opportunity is ideal for an experienced perioperative nursing leader who is passionate about driving clinical excellence, operational performance, patient safety, and team development within a high-acuity acute care hospital. The Director of Surgical Services will work a full-time day schedule with rotating weekends and report directly to the Vice President of Surgical Services.
The Director of Surgical Services will provide clinical, operational, and financial leadership for the Operating Room within a large Silicon Valley hospital featuring 12 ORs and a diverse surgical program spanning General Surgery, Spine, Orthopedics, Open Heart, and Neurosurgery. The surgical program utilizes advanced robotic technology, including Globus, Mako, ROSA, and multiple da Vinci robotic surgical systems. The Director will oversee approximately 50–55 FTEs and one direct-report Manager while ensuring high-quality patient care, efficient surgical operations, regulatory compliance, and strong physician collaboration.
The ideal candidate is an experienced Surgical Services or Operating Room leader with a strong acute care background and demonstrated success developing high-performing perioperative teams. This individual will collaborate with physicians, hospital leadership, and interdisciplinary teams to improve clinical outcomes, optimize patient throughput, manage financial and staffing performance, and support the continued growth and advancement of surgical services.
Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic, clinical, and operational leadership for the Operating Room, overseeing approximately 50–55 FTEs and department leadership while ensuring safe, efficient, high-quality, patient-centered surgical care
- Lead quality and performance improvement initiatives by implementing evidence-based perioperative practices, maintaining regulatory and accreditation compliance, improving patient safety, and optimizing surgical workflows and patient throughput
- Recruit, mentor, coach, and develop Surgical Services team members and leadership while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, employee engagement, professional growth, and operational excellence
- Oversee departmental financial performance, including budgeting, forecasting, staffing, labor productivity, supply and equipment utilization, capital planning, and cost-reduction initiatives while maintaining appropriate clinical resources
- Collaborate with surgeons, physicians, executive leadership, and interdisciplinary teams to strengthen existing surgical programs, improve patient and physician satisfaction, evaluate new technologies, and support strategic growth across General, Spine, Orthopedic, Open Heart, Neuro, and robotic surgery service lines
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
- Master's Degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or a related field preferred
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of California or ability to obtain California RN licensure prior to employment
- Minimum of 1 year of recent Surgical Services leadership experience as a Director of Surgical Services, Operating Room Director, or highly experienced Surgical Services/OR Manager required
- Minimum of 3 years of applicable Surgical Services or Operating Room experience within an acute care hospital environment required
- Demonstrated experience leading perioperative or Operating Room teams, including responsibility for staffing, clinical quality, patient safety, productivity, regulatory compliance, and operational performance
- Experience with complex surgical service lines such as General Surgery, Orthopedics, Spine, Neurosurgery, Cardiovascular/Open Heart Surgery, and/or robotic surgery strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of perioperative nursing practices, Operating Room operations, evidence-based care, regulatory and accreditation requirements, budgeting, labor management, patient throughput, quality improvement, and physician relations
- Excellent leadership, communication, financial management, critical thinking, organizational, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills with the ability to drive positive change within a complex acute care surgical environment
