BEPC has an open position for a Principal Mechanical Engineer

Location: Santa Clara, CA

Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance

Pay Rate: $78.24 - $81.24 Per hour based on experience (Paid Weekly)

Term: 6-month contract with possible extensions

Shift: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Requirements: BA required, Masters Degree Preferred / Deep hands-on expertise in complex mechanical, electro-mechanical, and pneumatic system design, ideally for life science or diagnostic instrumentation.

About the Program:

A leading biotechnology organization is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer tolead the mechanical design, development, characterization, and integration of cutting-edge sequencing systems. The organization is focused on making next-generation sequencing simple and accessible for routine use. By accelerating clinical research, streamlining workflows, and expanding assay capabilities, the team is broadening access to genomic data and lowering barriers to adoption.

From robust sample isolation and preparation tools to novel sequencing technology and advanced bioinformatics, the team is developing highly integrated end-to-end sequencing solutions that enable a “sample-in, result-out” workflow. This role sits within the Systems Technology Group, which focuses on creating and advancing technologies that significantly enhance DNA sequencing workflows. The Principal Mechanical Engineer will be a hands-on technical leader responsible for solving core mechanical challenges in next-generation sequencing platforms. You will concept, design, build, and test novel electro-mechanical, pneumatic, thermal, and fluidic solutions that ensure high performance, reliability, and longevity of complex instrumentation systems. This role requires someone who demonstrates strong motivation, independence, and resourcefulness in solving novel automation and sequencing challenges within a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead end-to-end mechanical design and development of mechanical subsystems including electro-mechanical, pneumatic, fluidic, and thermal components.
Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams (electrical, consumables, materials) to define and manage critical technical interfaces.
Develop mechanisms for automated reagent and flow cell loading, clamping, and sealing, ensuring reliability over repeated use.
Architect and design thermal control systems, including heating/cooling elements, sensors, condensation control, and heat management.
Partner with internal and external simulation experts to guide and validate CFD, thermal, and optical models, refining designs using empirical data.
Serve as the technical expert for assigned subsystems during integration, verification, and troubleshooting with systems integration teams.
Lead cross-functional design reviews, driving alignment and resolving technical trade-offs across engineering disciplines.
Drive technical execution and timelines for subsystem deliverables and contribute to overall project planning.
Create and maintain design documentation, including CAD models, drawings, and engineering specifications.
Provide data-driven recommendations to support architecture and technology decisions for future system development.
Present technical progress, analysis, and engineering trade-offs to project teams and stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:

PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, or related field with 3+ years of industry experience, OR
Master’s degree with 4+ years of relevant industry experience, OR
Bachelor’s degree with 7+ years of relevant industry experience
Deep hands-on expertise in complex mechanical, electro-mechanical, and pneumatic system design, ideally for life science or diagnostic instrumentation.
Strong experience with thermal management and precision temperature control systems.
Experience developing fluidic systems including pumps, valves, tubing, sensors, and materials selection.
Strong proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks) for detailed design and manufacturing drawings.
Experience designing components for multiple manufacturing processes including machining, injection molding, and additive manufacturing.
Strong troubleshooting skills across hardware, software, and chemistry interfaces.
Hands-on experience with machine shop tools, measurement equipment, and rapid prototyping technologies such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines.
Proficiency with Python, LabVIEW, or similar tools for device control and data acquisition.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience leading technical projects and mentoring engineers.
Experience using simulation tools (CFD, FEA) to guide design decisions.
Experience working with next-generation sequencing (NGS) or genomics instrumentation.
Experience working in a regulated product development environment.
Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects effectively.
