Full Job Description

Job Overview

Kinship Academy is seeking an experienced Lead Behavioral Specialist to support and oversee behavioral programming in our K–12 Nonpublic School serving students with disabilities.

This is a leadership-level, hands-on position for someone with strong experience in special education, behavior intervention, ABA, school-based behavioral support, crisis de-escalation, documentation, and staff training.

The Lead Behavioral Specialist serves as the primary behavioral support lead for the school. This position works closely with the Principal, Site Director, teachers, related service providers, and behavioral staff to ensure student Behavior Intervention Plans are implemented appropriately, behavioral services are provided, behavior data is collected, staff are trained, and students are supported safely and respectfully.

Our program uses a whole-child approach and incorporates Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), Zones of Regulation, Social Thinking, individualized behavior supports, and relationship-based interventions.

The ideal candidate is calm under pressure, highly organized, confident supporting students with challenging behaviors, and able to train and guide behavioral staff while also working directly with students.

Key ResponsibilitiesBehavioral Program Leadership

Serve as the lead behavioral support staff member for the schoolwide behavioral program.
Support implementation of PBIS, classroom behavior systems, student-specific BIPs, and individualized behavior supports.
Monitor whether behavioral services, behavior goals, and BIP strategies are being implemented as required by student IEPs.
Review behavior data and help identify patterns, concerns, progress, and needed adjustments.
Work with leadership and teachers to ensure behavior supports are consistent across classrooms and school settings.
Help maintain a safe, structured, positive, and supportive school environment.

Staff Training and Support

Train, coach, and mentor Behavioral Specialists, 1:1 aides, and classroom support staff.
Model appropriate behavior intervention strategies, de-escalation techniques, prompting, reinforcement, redirection, and replacement skill instruction.
Support staff in understanding student BIPs, behavior goals, data collection expectations, and safety plans.
Provide real-time support during behavioral escalations and classroom interventions.
Assist with onboarding and continued training for behavioral team members.
Help ensure staff follow school procedures, student-specific plans, and required documentation practices.

BIPs, IEP Goals, and Behavioral Services

Support the development, review, and implementation of student Behavior Intervention Plans.
Help ensure BIPs are appropriate, current, and being followed by staff.
Monitor student progress toward behavioral IEP goals and replacement behaviors.
Collaborate with teachers, related service providers, and leadership to align behavioral supports with IEP goals, therapeutic goals, classroom expectations, and student needs.
Provide behavior-related input for IEP meetings, progress updates, student support meetings, and team discussions as needed.
Notify leadership when a student’s behavior plan, services, goals, or supports may need review.

Documentation and Compliance

Ensure behavior data is collected accurately, consistently, and in a timely manner.
Support staff with behavior data collection, including ABC data, frequency, duration, replacement skill data, and goal-related data.
Review Behavior Incident Reports for clarity, accuracy, professionalism, and completeness.
Help ensure Behavior Incident Reports are completed and submitted within required timelines.
Support compliance with student IEPs, school policies, documentation expectations, and applicable education requirements.
Communicate documentation concerns, safety concerns, or service implementation concerns to the Principal and Site Director.

Crisis Prevention and Safety

Respond to behavioral escalations and support staff with safe, appropriate, and respectful de-escalation.
Use proactive strategies to reduce behavioral escalation whenever possible.
Follow student safety plans, crisis response procedures, and school-approved intervention practices.
Be trained in and support implementation of Handle With Care or other school-approved crisis prevention/intervention procedures.
Assist with post-incident follow-up, staff debriefing, student re-entry support, and documentation review.
Prioritize student dignity, student safety, staff safety, and least-restrictive intervention practices.

Direct Student Support

Provide direct behavioral support to students across K–12 settings.
Support students with emotional regulation, coping skills, communication, social thinking, problem-solving, and replacement behaviors.
Assist students during transitions, classroom activities, social situations, unstructured times, and moments of dysregulation.
Help students return to learning after behavioral incidents or emotional escalation.

Required Qualifications

At least 2 years of direct experience supporting or helping lead a behavioral program for students with disabilities, autism, emotional regulation needs, behavioral needs, or moderate to severe behaviors in a school, ABA, therapeutic, or special education setting.
Prior experience serving in a lead, senior, trainer, mentor, behavioral program support, or similar role strongly preferred.
Experience implementing and monitoring Behavior Intervention Plans.
Experience collecting, reviewing, and using behavior data to support student programming.
Strong understanding of PBIS, reinforcement, prompting, redirection, replacement behaviors, functional communication, and de-escalation strategies.
Ability to remain calm, professional, and effective during behavioral crises.
Experience supporting students with IEPs and behavior-related goals.
Ability to train, coach, mentor, or support Behavioral Specialists, 1:1 aides, paraprofessionals, or classroom staff.
Strong written documentation skills, including objective incident reporting and behavior data documentation.
Reliable attendance, professional communication, and confidentiality.
Valid DOJ/FBI Live Scan clearance prior to start.
TB clearance as required.
Work authorization in the United States.
Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including moving quickly, assisting per safety plans, and occasionally lifting up to approximately 50 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications

AA or BA in Psychology, Special Education, ABA, Child Development, Social Work, Education, or a related field.
RBT certification or willingness to obtain RBT certification within 6 months with employer support.
BCaBA or BCBA certification is a plus.
Experience in a Nonpublic School, special day class, therapeutic school, ABA program, or behavioral classroom setting.
Experience training or mentoring 1:1 aides, Behavioral Specialists, paraprofessionals, or classroom staff.
Experience supporting Functional Behavior Assessments or behavior data analysis.
Familiarity with Zones of Regulation, Social Thinking, trauma-informed practices, and school-based behavior systems.
Experience with digital behavior data systems, SIS platforms, or IEP platforms.
Bilingual Spanish/English is a plus.
