Job Summary:
The Music and Worship Leader provides leadership, passion, and energy for the church’s music ministry and collaborates closely with the Pastor and other leadership to offer meaningful, theologically grounded, and engaging worship. This role supports liturgical, contemporary, and blended worship, drawing from a wide range of musical styles and resources while honoring the traditions and mission of Wimberley United Methodist Church.
The Music and Worship Leader is responsible for cultivating musical excellence, encouraging congregational participation, and nurturing the gifts of musicians within the church and wider community.
The essential duties of the Music and Worship Leader include, but are not limited to:
- Collaborate with the Pastor to plan and select worship music and arts that reflect the liturgical calendar, sermon themes, and mission of the church.
- Plan, rehearse, and lead musicians for all regularly scheduled services and for seasonal/special services (excludes funerals/weddings unless separately contracted).
- Support and lead the congregational participation and singing in worship.
- Recruit, encourage, and nurture musicians from the congregation and community, honoring diverse gifts, backgrounds, and musical expressions.
- Supervise and help coordinate the work of accompanists, including scheduling and music preparation.
- Maintain and organize the church’s music library (digital and print), including recommending and ordering new music as needed; may recruit volunteers to assist with organization.
- Coordinate the music ministry budget in collaboration with the Pastor and Finance Committee.
- Arrange for qualified substitutes for the Music/Worship Leader or Accompanists when necessary.
- Communicate clearly and consistently with musicians, worship leaders, and staff regarding schedules, music selections, and expectations.
- Participate in Worship Planning meetings and collaborate with other church leadership as appropriate.
- Work with local artists and musicians to plan and present guest musicians in worship when appropriate.
- Coordinate church participation in community-wide worship events and ecumenical services.
- Engage in continuing education opportunities (workshops, professional meetings, and conferences), particularly those offered through the Rio Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church or similar organizations, as approved. Fees and dues will be reimbursed as agreed upon by the SPRC and Finance Committee.
Minimum Qualifications (Required):
- Ability to articulate and live out a Christian faith consistent with United Methodist values.
- Experience leading music in a church or worship setting.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with clergy, staff, and volunteers.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Basic technical proficiency related to worship planning and execution.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with United Methodist worship theology and liturgical calendar.
- Experience in blended worship contexts.
- Experience working with volunteer musicians of varying skill levels.
- Ability to play guitar, keys, or other instruments to enhance the worship team.
- Formal musical training or equivalent experience.
