Assist the certified physical education teacher in providing a safe, structured, inclusive, and engaging physical education program. Support preparation and implementation of teacher-directed instructional activities, student supervision and management, equipment setup and care, and routine administrative tasks. Work under the direct supervision of a certified teacher and within the scope of duties authorized for an educational aide.
Education/Certification:
- Associate's degree, two years of study at an institution of higher learning, or have met formal academic assessment as required by Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)
- Valid Texas educational aide certificate
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Ability to follow teacher-developed lesson plans, directions, safety procedures, and student-management expectations.
- Knowledge of basic physical education activities, age-appropriate movement skills, recreation, and equipment safety.
- Ability to assist students individually and in small or large groups while maintaining active supervision.
- Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with students, staff, parents, and the public.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment regarding student information.
- Ability to use standard office, instructional, and physical education equipment.
Experience:
- Some experience working with children or adolescents preferred.
- Experience in physical education, athletics, recreation, youth programs, or a related setting preferred.
- Work under the direction and direct supervision of the certified physical education teacher to support implementation of teacher-developed lesson plans, activities, and instructional objectives.
- Prepare, organize, distribute, collect, set up, and take down physical education equipment and instructional materials before and after classes.
- Conduct teacher-assigned instructional exercises, practice activities, and skill reinforcement with individual students or groups without assuming responsibility for planning instruction, evaluating student achievement, or assigning grades.
- Assist students in understanding directions, rules, routines, movement patterns, and safe use of equipment.
- Support differentiated and inclusive participation as directed by the teacher, including implementation of accommodations, modifications, health plans, or other student supports communicated by appropriate staff.
- Model appropriate sportsmanship, teamwork, respect, responsible use of equipment, and healthy participation.
- Assist the teacher with routine clerical and administrative tasks, including preparation of materials, equipment records, inventories, and other required documentation.
- Provide routine classroom and program information to substitute teachers as directed by the teacher or campus administrator.
- Maintain active supervision of students in physical education settings, including gymnasiums, fields, playgrounds, locker or staging areas, and other assigned instructional spaces.
- Assist the teacher in maintaining orderly student behavior and reinforce district, campus, and classroom rules and expectations using approved student-management procedures.
- Monitor students for unsafe conditions, signs of injury or illness, or other concerns and immediately report concerns to the teacher, nurse, or administrator as appropriate.
- Follow established emergency, first-aid, severe-weather, fire, evacuation, and safety procedures; promptly summon appropriate assistance when needed.
- Maintain appropriate student counts and supervision during transitions to and from physical education activities.
- Assist with supervision of students during arrival, dismissal, lunchroom, bus, playground, assemblies, special events, and other duties as assigned.
- Keep the teacher informed of student needs, behavioral concerns, injuries, participation issues, or other matters affecting student safety or learning.
- Respect student privacy and maintain confidentiality of educational, health, disability, and other protected information.
- Inspect equipment and activity areas for obvious hazards before use and promptly report damaged equipment, unsafe surfaces, or facility concerns.
- Assist with inventory, organization, cleaning, storage, care, and routine maintenance of physical education equipment and supplies.
- Ensure equipment is returned to designated storage areas and secured as directed.
- Assist with preparation and cleanup for campus physical education activities, fitness events, field days, and other school-sponsored activities as assigned.
- Use district property, equipment, technology, and supplies responsibly and in accordance with district procedures.
- Maintain professional conduct, punctuality, dependability, and appropriate boundaries with students.
- Participate in required staff development, safety training, compliance training, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
- Follow district policies, campus procedures, administrative regulations, and directives of assigned supervisors.
- Communicate concerns through appropriate supervisory channels and collaborate effectively with teachers and campus staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned that are consistent with the general purpose and scope of the position.
None. The position assists with student supervision but does not have supervisory authority over district employees.
