Classification
This is a non-exempt, full-time position. Typical work schedule is day shift Monday through Friday. Off shift, evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. Little travel is expected for this position.

Summary/Objective
Perform laboratory testing, analysis and reporting of asphalt binder and related products in support of plant operations and quality requirements.
Essential Functions
- Gather, identify, prepare, label, analyze and track product samples in accordance with protocols and guidelines
- Perform chemical analysis on product samples in accordance with quality guidelines, including penetration, rotational viscosity, absolute viscosity and kinematic viscosity testing
- Perform PG grade testing and PMAC PG testing on asphalt binder samples
- Perform cutback distillation testing as required by location
- Perform PMAC laboratory blending and percentage adjustments
- Grade and verify asphalt binder in accordance with AASHTO R29
- Participate in proficiency sample programs and Asphalt Institute round robin testing, including all required documentation
- Perform AMRL testing and documentation and support AMRL laboratory assessments
- Perform testing in accordance with state certification requirements and DOT specifications and maintain associated documentation
- Support laboratory reactions and formulations
- Set up, operate, calibrate, maintain and clean lab equipment in laboratory and production areas
- Support maintenance of AASHTO accreditation and the laboratory quality management system, including AASHTO R18 and ASTM D3666 requirements
- Accurately summarize and thoroughly communicate data, trends and other pertinent data
- Adhere to industry standards, safety regulations and company policies and procedures for handling, reporting and disposing of test samples
- Notify the Laboratory Manager of out-of-specification results, equipment malfunctions and supply needs
- Complete all assigned safety, general lab awareness and certification training within established timeframes
- Manage and prioritize assigned tasks simultaneously through effective communication and time management
General Duties
- Maintain neat and orderly equipment, laboratory and plant work areas.
- Understand and practice good laboratory safety and chemical hygiene.
- Listen and communicate effectively with management and production staff.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibility.
Work Environment
This job operates in a laboratory within a production environment. This role routinely uses laboratory equipment, such as scales, burners, beakers, flasks, thermometers, computers and standard office equipment such as, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Physical Demands
The employee is required to stand extensively and occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Must be able to read, write and speak in English
- Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills required
- College Degree in a scientific, technical, or engineering based program preferred
- One to three years of previous work experience in an academic, commercial, chemical, or product development laboratory preferred
- Asphalt Institute Basic Binder Technician certification required within an established timeframe; Asphalt Institute National Binder Technician certification preferred
- Computer literacy required
- Must be able to work in teams and/or with minimal supervision
- Must be able to work safely in office, laboratory and production environments with or without accommodation
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds repeatedly
- Must be willing to work a flexible schedule as business needs dictate
- Knowledge and experience with AASHTO, ASTM and ISO standards preferred
Pay: $26.00 - $35.00 per hour
