Description of Job:

The Coroner Assistant supports the Coroner in the investigation and documentation of deaths within the jurisdiction. This role involves administrative coordination, record management, communication with agencies and families, and ensuring accurate and timely completion of required legal documentation, including reporting through the State of Ohio’s Vital Statistics System.

Essential Functions to be performed (including but not limited to):

Review, request, and obtain medical, legal, and investigative records related to cases.
Complete and process death certificates in accordance with state and local regulations.
Accurately enter and maintain case information and required documentation within the State of Ohio Vital Statistics System.
Maintain organized, accurate, and secure files for all cases, ensuring documentation is available for future review or legal purposes.
Communicate with police departments, fire departments, hospitals, and other agencies to obtain necessary reports and records.
Serve as a point of contact for family members, providing information and guidance regarding specific cases with professionalism and sensitivity.
Works directly with the Coroner to ensure proper documentation, case tracking, and recordkeeping.
Assist in preparing case reports and summaries as needed.
Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and office procedures.
Perform general administrative duties to support daily operations of the Coroner’s office.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, healthcare, or related field preferred.
Previous experience in medical, legal, or administrative roles is preferred.
Familiarity with or ability to learn the State of Ohio Vital Statistics System.
Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills.
Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially when interacting with grieving families.
Attention to detail and accuracy in documentation.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Work Environment:

Office-based setting within a Coroner’s or Medical Examiner’s office.
May involve exposure to sensitive or distressing information.
Occasional interaction with external agencies and departments.
