Description of the Job:
The Erie County Courier, under direct supervision, is responsible to operate a County vehicle to deliver and pickup mail courier documents, packages, and other items that are distributed to and from all County facilities. Loads and unloads mail, packages, and office supplies. Drives the County’s vehicle on a daily basis to County offices and various other locations to make deliveries and pickups as directed. Makes scheduled deliveries of office and custodial supplies. Sorts and delivers interoffice mail on a scheduled basis. The schedule may be adjusted as the supervisor deems necessary to meet the needs of the County. The Mail/Supplies Courier will receive direct supervision from the Facilities/Fleet Manager.
Essential Functions to be Performed:
- Provide courier service for interoffice mail to multiple locations. This includes traveling between County buildings as well as other locations.
- Pick up needed supplies and deliver to buildings as needed.
- Sort and deliver inter-office mail according to locations.
- Pick up request for custodial supplies, load and deliver as scheduled.
- Required to drive County vehicle for all deliveries.
- Perform assigned responsibilities, duties and tasks according to established practices and procedures with minimal supervision within assigned time frame.
- Maintain restraint and keep calm when faced with emotional or angry individuals.
- Contribute to team effort of the Department.
Other Tasks which may be Assigned:
- Actively participate in assigned departmental and/or section meetings.
- May be required to assist with the inventory review of the custodial stock room.
- Assist in moving stock with motorized equipment.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school graduate or equivalent. Must have the ability to read, write and carry out oral and/or written instructions.
- Current driver’s license and insurable with a liability insurance carrier.
- Knowledge of departmental and County policies, procedures and practices with the ability to answer work related questions.
- Ability to operate communications equipment to expedite deliveries and pick-ups.
- Knowledge of County accident reporting procedures.
- Ability to follow department’s OSHA safety procedures and standards.
- Knowledge of the proper safety procedures, standards, and techniques for lifting, and other equipment related to performing responsibilities.
- Ability to use and maintain equipment/tools in a safe and correct manner.
- Ability to maintain physical activity over prolonged periods of time.
- Ability to detect physical movement of objects and to judge their direction.
- Ability to perceive details at normal reading distances and beyond.
- Ability to work with and help others in a fair and courteous manner with a variety of individuals.
- Ability to call for assistance in potentially dangerous situations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Erie County residency preferred.
Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
- Alternate between sitting/standing/walking throughout the day
- Lift/carry packaged items in a variety of sizes and shapes with maximum of 50 pounds
- Reaching with bilateral upper extremities into/up to/down to various heights
- Push/pull with at least 20 pounds of initial force
- Able to withstand temperature extremes
- Able to climb several flights of stairs
- Bed/squat/crouch/kneel
