Full Job Description

INTERMITTENT INTERPRETER

This recruitment is open to those invited to participate as a result of working over 45 days or more in a calendar year with the Superior Court of California County of Orange as an independent interpreter contractor.

LOCATIONS
The work locations include Santa Ana, Orange, Fullerton, Westminster and Newport Beach. This position may be assigned to one or all of the above locations.

ABOUT THE POSITION
Court Interpreters perform a wide variety of language interpretation activities on an assigned and as needed basis for the Superior Courts of California and for parties to proceedings, including witnesses, defendants, attorneys, other court personnel, and the public.

This is a single level classification. Employees in this classification perform consecutive and simultaneous interpretation of courtroom proceedings and other related interpreting services as needed. Employees in this classification also perform sight translation (reading written texts and giving an oral translation of text) as needed.

Opportunity Details

Duties for the classification may include, but are not limited to:

Interprets from and into English and the applicable non-English language using simultaneous and consecutive modes at court proceedings and for other court-related departments at the direction of the court.
Makes sight translations for the benefit of the court of documents including, but not limited to, court petitions, reports, waivers, felony disposition statement forms, and other documents.
Interprets for judges, attorneys, court staff, and other court-related departments at the direction of the court.
Notifies the court of any issues or situations that may impede the interpreters' performance.
Researches and understands terminology used in court and functions of the court which may include but not be limited to legal, technological, scientific, and/or medical terminology.
Reviews the daily docket and receives daily calendar assignments from the Trial Court Interpreter Coordinator (or other) and accurately completes daily activity logs, or other documentation as required.
Performs other language interpretation duties as assigned, such as providing general court information at an information counter to the non-English speaking public and processes documents related to interpretation.

Minimum Qualifications

REQUIREMENT
Possession of an "Invitation to Participate for Employment" letter from the Superior Court of California, County of Orange.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION
Possession of a valid Certificate as a "Certified Court Interpreter" or "Registered Court Interpreter" issued by the Judicial Council of California on behalf of the State of California.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid California driver's license or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

Selection Process
Step 1: Applications will be reviewed to identify candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for the position. Only those who meet the minimum qualifications will proceed to the next step in the recruitment process.

Step 2: Candidates' supplemental question responses may be evaluated and ranked. Depending on the number of applications, assessments and/or screening interviews may be conducted. If any part of the assessment process consists of proctored, in-person tests, candidates will be required to appear in person regardless of where they reside. Note: Though candidates may live outside of the State of California while participating in a recruitment process, individuals must reside within the State to be eligible for Court employment.

Step 3: Candidates who are successful in step 2 will be placed on the eligible list and may be considered for future employment. Placement on the eligible list is not a guarantee of interview or employment.

All candidates will be notified via email of their status at each step of the process. Additional steps for the selection process will include a local background and reference check.

A thorough background check will be conducted, including but not limited to work experience, education, certifications, driving record, criminal record, litigation judgment or verdict, and financial/credit information.
