We are seeking a skilled Journeyman Carpenter who has completed a California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR)-recognized Carpenter Apprenticeship Program to join our installation team on commercial and prevailing wage public works projects.
Position Summary
This position is responsible for the installation of specialty theatrical equipment and structural support systems in new and existing performance venues. The successful candidate will work alongside rigging installers, electricians, project managers, and other construction professionals to safely install complex stage systems in accordance with engineered drawings and manufacturer specifications.
Because many of our projects are subject to California Skilled and Trained Workforce requirements, applicants must have graduated from a California DIR-recognized Carpenter Apprenticeship Program and possess Journeyman status.
Required Qualifications
- Successful completion of a California DIR-recognized Carpenter Apprenticeship Program with Journeyman status.
- Ability to provide proof of apprenticeship graduation.
- Commercial construction experience required; experience with specialty construction or theatrical equipment is preferred.
- Experience on California prevailing wage/public works projects is a plus.
- Ability to read architectural, structural, and installation drawings.
- Excellent layout and measuring skills with attention to detail.
- Working knowledge of OSHA safety standards and safe construction practices.
- Proficient with hand tools, power tools, lasers, and layout equipment.
- Valid California driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to travel to project sites throughout Northern and Central California.
Primary Responsibilities
- Install structural wood blocking and backing required to support theatrical equipment.
- Install stage platforms, orchestra pit fillers, stage flooring systems, and other specialty wood components.
- Install theatrical rigging support systems, catwalk components, access platforms, and equipment mounting structures.
- Assist with the installation of counterweight rigging systems, curtain tracks, motorized equipment, tension grids, acoustic shell systems, and related theatrical equipment.
- Verify field dimensions and perform precise layout from construction drawings and engineered plans.
- Coordinate installations with electricians, rigging technicians, general contractors, and other trades.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Complete work in compliance with project specifications, company quality standards, OSHA regulations, and California prevailing wage requirements.
- Assist in training and mentoring apprentices as needed.
Physical Requirements
- Lift and carry materials weighing up to 75 pounds.
- Frequently work on ladders, scaffolding, aerial lifts, catwalks, and elevated work platforms.
- Ability to climb, kneel, crouch, reach overhead, and work in confined spaces.
- Comfortable working at heights and in active construction environments.
