Full Job Description

About the Company

(CONFIDENTIAL) growing specialty commercial sub-contractor with 500+ employees is seeking to add to their accounting and finance team. They have a 30+ year history of growth and success in the Bay Area.

About the Role

The Controller is the operational engine of the finance function. Reporting directly to the CFO, this role owns day-to-day accounting operations — close, compliance, job-cost integrity, systems, and team leadership — while supporting the CFO on budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting. The Controller manages the AP, AR, and Payroll teams and is the primary driver of accounting accuracy, timeliness, and control across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Close & Reporting

Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process — accurate, on time, every time.
Prepare internal financial statements, account reconciliations, and variance analysis for CFO review.
Maintain general-ledger integrity, chart of accounts, and intercompany transaction accuracy.
Prepare the monthly borrowing-base certificate and supporting schedules; execute and respond to borrowing-base, OCIP, and external financial-statement audits.

Job Cost & WIP Management

Maintain WIP schedules and job-cost ledgers across all active projects.
Execute over-time revenue recognition under ASC 606 using the cost-to-cost input method.
Track and manage retention receivables and payables.
Partner with project managers to ensure job-cost accuracy; flag margin variances to the CFO proactively.

Budgeting & Forecasting Support

Compile, reconcile, and organize budget data in support of the CFO-led annual planning process.
Maintain actuals-vs-budget tracking and prepare variance commentary for CFO review.
Produce the daily cash-position report that feeds the CFO's rolling cash-flow forecast.

Team Leadership

Directly manage the AP, AR, and Payroll teams.
Set clear expectations, develop team members, and hold the team accountable to deadlines and accuracy standards.
Build repeatable, scalable processes that reduce key-person dependency.

Compliance & Payroll Execution

Execute union and prevailing-wage payroll processing and certified payroll reporting.
Execute monthly union trust-fund (fringe) remittances and reporting to multiemployer benefit funds.
Ensure line-level compliance with California prevailing-wage requirements; support multi-state payroll compliance under CFO policy direction.
Own and respond to all OCIP and insurance payroll audits (workers' comp / GL).
Prepare and file sales/use tax returns; maintain the use-tax accrual and self-assessment; support income and franchise tax preparation.

Systems & Internal Controls

Own Foundation ERP day-to-day; maintain Procore financial-data integrity.
Maintain segregation of duties across AP, AR, and Payroll, and prepare control documentation for CFO and external-audit review.
Strengthen internal controls across all accounting functions; support external-audit preparation.
Identify and implement process improvements that increase reporting speed and accuracy; flag integration issues and system gaps to the CFO.

What You Bring

Required

7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a Controller or Senior Accounting Manager role.
Construction-industry experience required — specialty subcontracting strongly preferred.
Proficiency in Foundation accounting software.
Working knowledge of Procore and its financial-module integrations.
Deep fluency in job-cost accounting, WIP reporting, and over-time revenue recognition under ASC 606.
Demonstrated ability to lead and develop an AP / AR / Payroll team.
Strong communicator — equally comfortable in Excel and presenting to the CFO.

Preferred

CPA designation or equivalent experience.
Experience supporting surety/bonding relationships and external audits in a construction context.
Experience with borrowing-base reporting, OCIP / insurance audits, and California sales/use tax compliance.
Familiarity with California prevailing wage, union payroll, certified payroll, and trust-fund (fringe) compliance.
Track record of improving accounting systems, controls, or close timelines.
