Literacy and Humanities Bureau:
The New Mexico Statewide Literacy Framework (NMSLF) is intended to support districts, schools, and teachers as they implement a comprehensive literacy system from birth through high school that ensures all students are prepared for meaningful post-secondary opportunities, including further education, meaningful employment, and lifelong learning.
Why does the job exist?
This position for the Public Education Department (PED) will serve as Literacy Coach (6-12) for the Disciplinary Literacy Support Schools initiative and other statewide secondary literacy programs. This position requires skills in job-embedded coaching, professional development facilitation, planning, modeling, and supporting research-based strategies in reading instruction and the science of reading.
The Literacy Coach must have the ability to support teachers, school-based and district literacy coaches, interventionists, and school and district administrators in planning, organizing, and delivering instruction to meet individual and group needs utilizing state guidelines and resources. Additionally, the Literacy Coach will develop a system of monitoring in conjunction with the PED in which they evaluate instructional successes and challenges and develop, with the school and district administrators, a plan to assist teachers in improving their instruction to ensure that student achievement is positively impacted.
The Literacy Coach will:
Facilitate the Understanding of Reading and Writing
1. Familiarize teachers and school and district administrators with the research on best practices for teaching literacy skills to adolescents and disciplinary literacy.
2. Impart knowledge of the English Language Arts Common Core State Standards in each grade level and WIDA English Language Development (ELD) standards.
3. Know and support teachers and school and district administrators in the implementation and alignment of curriculum, standards, instruction, and assessment.
4. Understand and support learning for English language learners (ELLs) and students with disabilities.
Guide the Understanding of Pedagogy
1. Familiarize teachers and school and district administrators with best practices in reading and writing instruction.
2. Provide teachers with a collection of effective instructional strategies to draw upon in their instructional practice.
3. Guide teachers in the knowledge of how students best learn in an engaging environment and support the necessary strategies for engagement and appropriate learning.
4. Utilize the PED's pedagogical and training supports in coaching (e.g., AIM PPR: S, Statewide Literacy Plan, Disciplinary Literacy framework)
Provide Monitoring and Support
1. Support data collection and analysis to ensure that data is being used effectively to inform instructional support for student growth and achievement.
2. Work with principals to create a school-wide focus on goals for reading and writing achievement.
3. Monitor the effectiveness of various literacy initiatives and make recommendations for ongoing instructional improvement.
Create and Facilitate Professional Development Sessions
1. Design, develop, and deliver professional development sessions focused on evidence-based and research-based literacy instructional practices and strategies.
2. Collaborate with school and district leaders to identify literacy instructional needs and tailor professional development opportunities accordingly.
3. Develop training materials, resources, and implementation tools aligned with English Language Arts Common Core State Standards, high-quality instructional materials, MLSS, and district goals.
4. Foster collaborative professional learning communities focused on literacy growth, continuous improvement, and student achievement.
Professional Learning Expectations
1. Participate fully in professional development opportunities and remain informed on the most recent professional research on instructional best practices for teaching reading and writing.
2. Attend all professional development provided by the PED and vendor partner, including webinars and in-person training sessions.
3. Regularly communicate with other literacy coaches, reading specialists, and interventionists to share best practices and ideas for how to best support teachers and administrators.
4. Work collectively with peers and consultants in reflecting on personal learning and how that learning supports student achievement and the growth of teachers and school and district administrators
5. Provide professional development opportunities to build capacity in teacher efficacy surrounding ELLs.
How does it get done?
The Literacy Coach monitors project goals for short- and long-term implementation and coordination of disciplinary literacy professional learning throughout the state of New Mexico; includes providing leadership in expanding literacy opportunities, access to services and training of all 6-12 educators on disciplinary literacy and the science of reading, referral services, and public awareness, statewide data collection and analysis, and interpreting state statutes and rules to ensure compliance.

The work includes collaboration with teachers, administrators, district leadership, the Literacy and Humanities Bureau team, the Assessment Bureau team, and English language arts partners at the state and national levels and other agency bureaus.
Ideal Candidate

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Education, Public Administration, or Business Administration and four (4) years of experience as a teacher and/or program administrator. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
Working Conditions
Most of the work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Some travel is required to provide and monitor professional learning.
