This position is in the Community and Health Systems Epidemiology Bureau of the New Mexico Department of Health¿s Center for Health Protection (CHP). The Community and Health Systems Epidemiology Bureau consist of the Health Systems Epidemiology program. the Community Health Assessment program, the Health Equity and Tribal Epidemiology section, and the Geographic Information System Epidemiology program.

This position exists to ensure the timely, accurate, and actionable collection, management, and analysis of syndromic surveillance data for the New Mexico Department of Health. The role is essential for monitoring emerging health trends, identifying potential outbreaks, and maintaining high-quality data flows from healthcare facilities and the state health information exchange. By applying epidemiological methods, overseeing on-boarding and data quality processes, and developing analytical tools and reports, the position strengthens the department's capacity to respond quickly to public health events and support data-driven decision-making.
How does it get done?
The Syndromic Surveillance Epidemiologist is responsible for managing the full lifecycle of syndromic surveillance data, including coordinating with healthcare facilities and the health information exchange to ensure data completeness, timeliness, and accuracy. The role conducts ongoing epidemiological analysis to identify trends, support public health decision¿making, and detect potential outbreaks. Key responsibilities include overseeing the syndromic onboarding workflow, monitoring system outages, approving facilities for production, and maintaining high¿quality reporting tools such as dashboards and data quality tracking systems. The position also develops and disseminates routine surveillance reports, provides HL7 training and troubleshooting support, creates communications for data users, and responds to complex data requests from internal programs and research partners. Additionally, the role oversees Emergency Department data processing and ensures timely submission to the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP), supporting statewide healthcare utilization monitoring and reporting.

Minimum Qualification
Master's Degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Sciences, Social Sciences, or Statistics and one (1) year in Public Health to include data analysis and linking methodology. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
