Full Job Description

The Northern Sonoma County Fire Protection District is currently accepting applications for Fire Inspector. From inspections to fire prevention education, this position is essential to the overall safety of our community.

The Fire Inspector performs a wide variety of fire prevention duties. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

Building Life Safety Inspections: Coordinate and perform inspections at commercial operations, schools, and other occupancies, primarily during non-wildfire portion of the year. This position is not expected to review building plans or serve as the District’s fire marshal.
Defensible Space Inspections: Coordinate and perform defensible space inspections during the spring and early summer months and by request. This position may also provide guidance and recommendations to individuals and communities beyond what laws require.
Public Education: Develop and deliver public education programs on topics related to fire and life safety to all age groups; prepares and develops fire and life safety handout materials. Prepare and/or update fire and life safety news releases and public service announcements.
Community Outreach: Work with District staff on community relations matters. Serve as liaison and represent the District with designated governmental agencies, groups and organizations. Attend community meetings and respond to questions. Distribute information and provide guidance to individuals and communities on actions that can be implemented to reduce human loss and property damage from wildfires. Assist in managing and creating social media content with a direct emphasis on fire prevention, mitigation, and safety.
Wildfire Risk Reduction: Coordinate with state, county, city, and local agencies and community groups, including fire agencies, to support wildfire risk reduction efforts, including: Firewise USA designation; Education and prevention presentations, community meetings, etc.; Structural hardening education; Support vegetation management projects.
Other: Other non-safety projects and duties as needed. This position does not respond to emergencies, but may support emergency responses with logistics, public information, social media, answering the telephone, etc.

This position works a modified work week, with occasional weekend or evening commitments for events and meetings. This position is available as either a part-time or full-time position. The full-time position works forty (40) hours per week. The part-time position works less than thirty (30) hours per week with flexible scheduling and does not include benefits.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years old; possess a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record; high school diploma or equivalent. Within one year from date of hire, successful completion of all Fire Inspector 1 courses. Knowledge of business letter writing and basic report preparation with proficient spelling and grammatical skills; knowledge of computers and applicable computer software applications. Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks.

One or more of the following:

Fire Prevention/Inspector and Fire System Courses
Two years of experience in fire and life safety prevention/inspection or a related field
Two years of firefighting experience

Highly Desirable Qualifications

Experience involving customer service; knowledge of building construction types, building and fire codes; fire hazards; methods and techniques of fire prevention; experience or knowledge of vegetation management program implementation. An associate’s degree in fire technology, science, management, administration, or closely related field.

Selection Process

The selection process will include one or more of the following components: application review, oral interview, and background investigation. The District will prioritize full-time applicants when evaluating candidates. Meeting the qualifications does not guarantee an invitation to participate in the selection process.

Pay: From $38.47 per hour

Expected hours: No more than 40.0 per week
