Changing Options Transitional Residential Treatment Program (TRTP) is seeking a compassionate, motivated, and recovery-oriented Certified Peer Support Specialist to join our team. Our program provides residential mental health services to adults living with Serious Mental Illness (SMI) who are working toward recovery, wellness, and successful community integration.

As a Peer Support Specialist, you will use your lived experience with mental health recovery, combined with your professional training and certification, to inspire hope, promote self-determination, and support residents in achieving their recovery goals.

Position Summary

The Certified Peer Support Specialist serves as a role model, mentor, advocate, and recovery coach for individuals receiving services in the Transitional Residential Treatment Program. Through shared understanding and lived experience, the Peer Support Specialist helps residents build independent living skills, develop wellness strategies, strengthen community connections, and advance their recovery journey.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provide peer support services in accordance with California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) guidelines and standards.
Build supportive and trusting relationships with residents through shared lived experience and recovery principles.
Assist residents in identifying personal strengths, goals, and pathways to recovery.
Facilitate peer support groups and wellness-focused activities.
Encourage resident participation in treatment, recovery planning, and community integration activities.
Teach and model coping skills, self-advocacy, communication skills, and independent living skills.
Support residents in accessing community resources, benefits, support networks, vocational opportunities, and educational programs.
Collaborate with the multidisciplinary treatment team while maintaining the unique peer support role.
Assist residents in developing Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP), relapse prevention strategies, and personal recovery goals.
Document services accurately and timely in accordance with program requirements in the electronic health record
Promote a trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and recovery-oriented environment.
Support residents during periods of crisis while encouraging hope, resilience, and self-determination.
May assist clients by driving to appointments, benefits applications, and assessing social service needs
Assist clerical and administrative duties as assigned
Other duties as assigned

Minimum QualificationsRequired:

Current CalMHSA Peer Support Specialist Certification.
Lived experience with mental health recovery, substance use recovery, or experience as a family member/caregiver as defined by CalMHSA certification standards.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and advocacy skills.
Ability to work effectively with adults experiencing serious mental illness.
Ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.
CPR and First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain within required timeframe).
A valid California driver's license in good standing
Ability to pass criminal/background clearance

Preferred:

Experience working in behavioral health, residential treatment, social services, or community mental health settings.
Knowledge of recovery-oriented practices, trauma-informed care, and psychosocial rehabilitation principles.
Experience facilitating support groups and wellness activities.
Bilingual abilities are highly desirable.
