Eligibility Specialist

Location: Sarasota, FL
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM
Work Environment: Fully Onsite

Position Summary

The Eligibility Specialist serves as a key resource for patients seeking healthcare coverage and financial assistance. This role works directly with patients to assess financial needs, identify available coverage options, and assist with enrollment in government-sponsored and financial assistance programs. The Eligibility Specialist provides education, advocacy, and support throughout the eligibility process while helping patients understand their financial responsibilities and access available resources.

This position requires exceptional customer service skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to navigate sensitive financial discussions with empathy and professionalism.

Essential Responsibilities

Meet directly with patients to assess healthcare coverage needs and identify appropriate financial assistance resources.
Guide patients through eligibility and enrollment processes for government-sponsored healthcare programs and financial assistance programs.
Assist uninsured and underinsured individuals in securing coverage and accessing payment assistance resources.
Educate patients regarding insurance benefits, healthcare coverage options, and anticipated out-of-pocket expenses.
Conduct patient interviews and gather documentation necessary to determine eligibility for assistance programs.
Partner with hospital departments, healthcare providers, and community organizations to coordinate patient financial support services.
Facilitate payment collection efforts and assist patients with establishing payment arrangements when appropriate.
Perform outreach and follow-up activities to obtain required documentation and ensure timely completion of enrollment and eligibility processes.
Manage an assigned caseload of patient accounts, maintaining accurate records, documentation, and follow-up activities.
Provide financial counseling support across multiple patient care settings based on operational needs.
Ensure compliance with organizational policies, payer requirements, and regulatory guidelines.
Maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with HIPAA and hospital standards.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Previous experience working directly with individuals in a healthcare, insurance, human services, or customer-facing environment.
Strong customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to establish rapport and conduct sensitive financial conversations with professionalism, empathy, and discretion.
Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, patient-focused environment.
Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, and stable employment history.
Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders.

Monday - Friday
8:30 AM - 5:00 PM
$19.10-$23.85 hourly
