Full Job Description

Young Adult Peer Specialist :School-Based & Community-Based programs,

(Full or Part-time)

NAMI is seeking Young Adult Peer Specialist(s) to provide non-clinical direct peer support (one-on-one and group) in various settings throughout Sarasota, Manatee, and Desoto Counties, such as in-home, in schools, at NAMI’s wellness drop-in center, and in the community. Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to, serving as a leader within Youth MOVE Suncoast, delivering NAMI’s programs and presentations in elementary, middle, and high schools, and offering direct peer support to youth and young adults engaged in NAMI’s Individual and Family Peer Support program. The preferred candidate will have lived experience as a current or former user of mental health and/or co-occurring substance use services as a minor or transitional age youth who can relate to youth navigating behavioral health challenges. The candidate must be able to pass a Level 2 background check and have reliable transportation. Young Adult Peer Specialists within this program will need to be able to travel to various school and community-based settings. Flexible scheduling is available to meet program needs. Duties

Provide peer support and mentorship to young adults experiencing mental health conditions, substance use disorders, or co-occurring disorders.
Share personal recovery experiences to inspire hope and motivate clients toward positive change.
Facilitate group activities, workshops, and one-on-one sessions focused on recovery strategies, harm reduction, and wellness promotion.
Assist clients in developing coping skills through motivational interviewing, behavioral health education, and crisis management techniques.
Support participants during crises by implementing crisis intervention protocols and connecting them with appropriate resources.
Maintain strict confidentiality of participant information while fostering a trusting environment.
Advocate for participant needs within the broader behavioral health system, promoting client rights and peer support principles.

Qualifications

Lived experience with mental health conditions, substance use disorders, or co-occurring disorders; previous peer support experience is highly valued.
Strong understanding of behavioral health concepts including crisis management, harm reduction, and recovery principles.
Ability to work effectively with culturally diverse communities and demonstrate cultural sensitivity.
Excellent communication skills for client engagement, mentoring, and advocacy.
Knowledge of addiction counseling, mental health counseling techniques, and social work practices preferred.
Experience in crisis intervention and crisis management strategies essential.
Ability to share personal recovery stories responsibly while maintaining professional boundaries.
Commitment to maintaining client confidentiality and practicing ethical peer support advocacy.
