Title: Metal Fabricator / Custom Welder
Reports to: Production Supervisor
Location: Rincon, GA
Summary/Objective
We are seeking a highly skilled and well-experienced Metal Fabricators. The ideal candidate must possess mastery over all primary welding processes (MIG, TIG, Stick, Flux-Core) and be capable of taking raw carbon steel materials and transforms them into finished, high-quality structures based on blueprint specifications.
This position will weld/assemble enclosures, tanks, and other structural components for Power Transformers, Switch Gears, Reactors, and other related equipment. Welding is based on mechanical blueprint specifications and built to established internal shop standards and/or per the Welder’s Supervisor's instructions.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Verify conformance of workpieces to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapes.
- Align and fit parts according to specifications, using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and hammers.
- Move parts into position, manually or with hoists or cranes.
- Position, align, fit, and weld parts to form complete units or subunits, following blueprints and layout specifications, and using jigs, welding torches, and hand tools.
- Set up and operate fabricating machines, such as brakes, rolls, shears, flame cutters, grinders, and drill presses, to bend, cut, form, punch, drill, or otherwise form and assemble metal components.
- Lay out and examine metal stock or workpieces to be processed to ensure that specifications are met.
- Perfom Comprehensive Fabrication: Cut, shape, bend, align, and assemble carbon steel plates, structural shapes, and pipes.
- Perform All-Process Welding: Perform high-quality structural and cosmetic welds using GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), SMAW (Stick), and FCAW (Flux-Core) in all positions (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead).
- Blueprint Reading: Study engineering drawings and blueprints to determine materials requirements and task sequences. Interpret complex engineering drawings, welding symbols, technical schematics, and layouts to plan the fabrication sequence.
- Tack-weld fitted parts together.
- Lift or move materials and finished products, using large cranes and forklift.
- Remove high spots and cut bevels, using hand files, portable grinders, and cutting torches
- Required Education and Experience
- High School Diploma / GED.
- Experience: Minimum of 5+ years of professional metal fabrication experience working primarily with carbon steel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current or previous AWS (American Welding Society) certifications (e.g., D1.1 Structural Steel Welding Code).
- Experience with pipe welding or pressure vessels.
- Formal vocational training or completion of a welding/fabrication apprenticeship.
- Welding Mastery: Proven ability to pass welding performance tests across multiple processes (MIG/TIG/Stick/Flux-Core).
- Technical Layout: Strong mathematical skills, including geometry and trigonometry, for material layout and calculating bend allowances.
- Physical Fitness: Ability to lift up to 60 lbs, stand for long periods, and work in hot, dusty, or noisy industrial environments.
- Safety Mindset: Strict adherence to OSHA standards, including the proper use of PPE (welding hood, respirators, safety glasses, steel-toe boots).
- Ability to operate forklift.
- Ability and willingness to work overtime, evening / off shifts, weekends, and holidays.
