Territory: Hilton Head Island, Bluffton, Beaufort, and the Surrounding Lowcountry
Independent Contractor | Commission-Based Opportunity
Windward Shutters is seeking a polished, motivated, and relationship-driven independent sales representative to serve our established Hilton Head Island, Bluffton, and Beaufort territory.
This is an active Windward Shutters market with existing customers, established demand, and company-generated sales opportunities. The representative will manage qualified leads while continuing to grow the territory through prospecting, networking, referrals, and relationship development.
The territory offers opportunities across luxury and custom homes, renovations, new residential construction, multifamily communities, hospitality properties, and commercial projects. The representative will work directly with homeowners while cultivating long-term relationships with custom homebuilders, general contractors, architects, designers, property managers, and commercial construction firms.
A significant part of the role involves reviewing architectural and construction plans, identifying applicable openings and shutter requirements, and preparing accurate project takeoffs. Experience reading plans and performing takeoffs is preferred; however, Windward Shutters will consider strong sales candidates who demonstrate the technical aptitude, attention to detail, and commitment required to learn this skill.
This is not a transactional, lowest-price sales role. The successful representative must be able to communicate the value of superior products, thoughtful design, accurate project planning, professional installation, and dependable service.
Previous shutter experience is not required. We are looking for a driven, proactive salesperson with strong interpersonal skills, professional judgment, technical aptitude, attention to detail, and the confidence to guide customers through a premium purchasing decision.
Responsibilities
Residential and Consultative Sales
- Respond promptly and professionally to company-generated residential and commercial sales opportunities.
- Conduct on-site consultations with homeowners, builders, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
- Evaluate each property’s architectural, functional, and storm-protection needs.
- Recommend appropriate decorative shutters, Colonial and Bahama styles, and hurricane-protection solutions.
- Take preliminary measurements, document project conditions, and capture jobsite photographs.
- Prepare and present clear, accurate, and professional proposals.
- Maintain consistent follow-up, move opportunities through the sales process, and confidently ask for the business.
- Communicate Windward Shutters’s value based on quality, expertise, service, and execution rather than price alone.
Plan Review, Takeoffs, and Estimating
- Review architectural drawings, construction plans, elevations, schedules, and project specifications.
- Identify relevant openings and product requirements from residential and commercial construction documents.
- Prepare accurate material and project takeoffs to support estimating and proposal development.
- Translate construction documents into a clearly defined scope of work.
- Recognize missing information, discrepancies, or project conditions requiring clarification before pricing.
- Coordinate with builders, contractors, architects, estimators, and Windward’s internal team to confirm project scope.
- Develop proficiency in Windward Shutters' plan-review, takeoff, estimating, and proposal processes.
Business Development and Territory Growth
- Maintain and expand relationships with custom and production homebuilders throughout the territory.
- Develop connections with general contractors, commercial construction firms, architects, designers, property managers, and other referral partners.
- Identify upcoming residential, multifamily, hospitality, and commercial projects where Windward Shutters’s products may be a fit.
- Build a self-generated pipeline through networking, referrals, jobsite visits, professional associations, and direct outreach.
- Become a visible and trusted Windward Shutters resource within the local building and design community.
Project Coordination and Customer Experience
- Maintain accurate records of customers, opportunities, proposals, project details, and follow-up activity using Windward Shutters’ sales systems.
- Coordinate with Windward Shutters’s operations team as sold projects move through final measurement, ordering, scheduling, and installation.
- Set clear customer expectations and facilitate an organized handoff from sales to operations.
- Represent Windward Shutters professionally in customers’ homes, at jobsites, at industry events, and throughout the local business community.
- Develop a strong working knowledge of Windward Shutters’ products, applications, installation requirements, and sales process.
Ideal Representative
- Polished, personable, and credible when working with discerning homeowners and respected construction professionals.
- Highly motivated, competitive, organized, and driven to achieve results.
- A proactive go-getter who enjoys developing relationships and creating new business.
- Able to work independently, manage a territory, and maintain consistent momentum without daily supervision.
- Strong presentation, negotiation, follow-up, and closing skills.
- Able to build trust and communicate effectively with homeowners, builders, architects, designers, and contractors.
- Comfortable selling premium, customized solutions with longer and more consultative sales cycles.
- Able to sell on quality, expertise, service, and long-term value rather than relying on price.
- Strong attention to presentation, communication, documentation, and customer follow-through.
- Comfortable conducting in-home consultations and visiting active construction sites.
- Able to discuss design preferences with homeowners and technical project requirements with construction professionals.
- Comfortable using a tablet, CRM, email, digital proposals, and other mobile sales tools.
- Familiarity with Hilton Head Island, Bluffton, Beaufort, and the surrounding Lowcountry is strongly preferred.
- Reliable transportation and the ability to travel throughout the territory are required.
Technical Experience
- Experience reading architectural or construction plans and performing material takeoffs is strongly preferred.
- Candidates without direct takeoff experience must demonstrate strong technical aptitude and a willingness to learn.
- Comfortable working with measurements, dimensions, product schedules, elevations, and detailed project documentation.
- Able to translate construction documents into an accurate scope of work and customer proposal.
- Strong mathematical ability and exceptional attention to detail.
- Capable of balancing relationship-driven sales with the technical accuracy required for custom residential and commercial projects.
- Home-improvement, construction, building-products, luxury-product, architectural-product, or in-home sales experience is preferred but not required.
- Existing relationships with homebuilders, contractors, architects, designers, property managers, or commercial construction firms are a plus.
Compensation
- Independent-contractor opportunity with uncapped commission potential.
- Qualified company-generated opportunities within an active, established territory.
- Additional earning potential through self-generated residential, builder, and commercial business.
- Windward Shutters may provide a defined commission advance during the initial transition period.
- Complete commission rates, payment milestones, and advance terms will be established in a written independent-contractor agreement.
- The representative will be responsible for applicable taxes, insurance, transportation, and ordinary business expenses except where otherwise stated in the agreement.
What Success Looks Like
The successful representative will provide responsive, professional coverage for Windward Shutters' existing Hilton Head Island, Bluffton, and Beaufort business while developing a growing pipeline of residential, builder, and commercial opportunities.
Success requires more than closing individual homeowner leads. It means becoming a trusted resource within the local building community, strengthening existing relationships, developing new partnerships, and generating recurring business over time.
The representative will combine polished, relationship-driven selling with the technical discipline needed to review plans, prepare accurate takeoffs, define project scope, and develop dependable proposals.
Above all, the representative will protect the Windward Shutters customer experience, communicate the value of our premium position, and consistently demonstrate the initiative and follow-through needed to grow the territory.
