$16.00/per hour

This is a part-time, temporary position not eligible for benefits.

Work Schedule

Standard Hours: Up to 19.5 hours per week. Shifts are generally scheduled during office hours (between 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM)

Evening Schedule: Some evening work may be required to support productions. During these periods, shifts will start later in the day (e.g., 4:00 PM – 8:30 PM or 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM).

Daily hours will flex (some days longer, some shorter) to maintain a 19.5-hour work week.

Weekend Requirements: Occasional Saturday work is required for performances and strikes (approximately 4 within the academic year).

Advance Notice: Schedules are established approximately six months in advance, providing predictable scheduling.

Location: This is a 100% on-site position.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Costume Shop Supervisor, the Costume Shop Assistant supports all operations of the costume shop, including the construction, alteration, and maintenance of costumes for theatre, dance, and musical productions. This role may also serve as a stagehand during productions.

In conjunction with the performing arts center team, this position plays a key role in maintaining the working environment in the scene shop. They will also work closely with actors, designers, students, staff, and faculty to shepherd a production process that is supportive and sustainable.

Arnette Scott Ward Performing Arts Center Summary We want to share what it actually feels like to work in our department at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Our Spaces & Season: We operate three distinct venues: a 299-seat main stage theatre, an intimate black box, and an outdoor amphitheater. We primarily support our performing arts academic programs alongside some community rentals. A typical season includes 3 main stage productions, 3 black box shows, 2 dance concerts, and roughly 50 smaller concerts, recitals, and events. While our calendar is active, we intentionally build in downtime between events so our staff has time for maintenance, reflection, and planning. Our Commitment to Balance: At the Arnette Scott Ward Performing Arts Center, we believe that producing excellent live events shouldn't come at the cost of our staff's well-being. We deliberately structure our schedules to provide enough time to get the work done without burdening our team. When you work with us, you can expect: Protected Weekends: We essentially never work weekends, with the exception of about four Saturdays per season for matinees and show strikes. Sensible Hours & Rest: We don't do exhausting overnights. We enforce hard stops at 10:30 PM for tech and dress rehearsals, and 11:00 PM for strikes. We also ensure a minimum 12-hour turnaround between daily shifts. No Mandatory Overtime: We plan our production calendars deliberately to avoid putting the burden of overtime on our staff and technicians. Holidays Off: We endeavor to honor all college holidays provided to our students, meaning our staff gets to enjoy those well-deserved breaks as well. You will be joining a supportive, dedicated team of peers—including our Scene Shop Assistant, Props Assistant, Costume Shop Assistant, Lighting/Sound Assistant, and Marketing & Box Office Assistant, as well as a team of overhire technicians and lead staff—who share the goal of creating great art in a healthy, low-stress environment.

Essential Functions

Constructs costume pieces for theatre, dance, and musical productions. Performs sewing, mending, and construction of costume pieces for theatre, dance, and musical productions. Utilizes non-destructive techniques to embellish existing or rented costumes to meet design specifications. Works alongside the supervisor and designers to ensure all costume elements are in a fully realized and safe condition for use by performers
Maintains the costume shop, dressing rooms, and storage areas for students, staff, and faculty. Participates in the organization and cleaning of the costume shop and dressing rooms; ensures tools and supplies are properly stored. Coordinates laundry and putbacks after performances or rehearsals, including laundering, pressing, and ironing. Performs scheduled maintenance tasks as assigned. Repairs and maintains costume pieces to keep them usable for future productions. Deconstructs costume pieces to reuse materials for future productions. Assists faculty and students looking to pull costume pieces for events or classroom performances; assists with the checkout and return process.
Works as a stagehand on productions as assigned. Assists actors with costume changes, hair, and makeup Assists cast and crew with their duties in order to ensure a high quality production.
Other Duties Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must be work study eligible. You can confirm your status by speaking with the college’s Financial Aid office.

Desired Qualifications

Familiarity with the operation of domestic and/or industrial sewing machines and sergers.

Experience working with patterns for garment construction.

Interest in theatrical costume design or fashion design.

Experience with hair dressing and/or makeup application.

Ability to work independently.
