Job Information

Job Title: Student Assistance Professional

Division: Teaching & Learning

Department: Student Services Center

Salary Placement: Level 33 ($38.41-43.88)

Hours/Days: 8 hours/ 190 days

Job Purpose

Provide individual and group social, emotional, and behavioral counseling support, case management, academic coaching and referral for students impacted by substance use/abuse and/or other behavioral/mental health issues. Serve as a resource to staff, students, and parents for non-academic supports.

Responsibilities:

Recruit, enroll, screen, case manage and provide social, emotional, and behavioral counseling support to identified youth in need of Student Assistance Services.

Identify student needs and barriers to student success and assist in overcoming these barriers and linking to both in- and out-of-school services.

Implement evidence-based student assistance prevention/intervention strategies and programs, including classroom presentations/lessons and facilitating educational support groups for students. This includes:

Conducting short-term social, emotional, and behavioral support groups such as refusal/problem solving, substance use intervention, loss and grief and coping skills and social skills development.
Coordinate and deliver (universal - all students) prevention activities that support the implementation of school wide positive behavior supports, reduce substance use risk, and foster social and emotional learning. This may include delivery of approved curriculum in classroom setting or small groups.
When assigned to Community Prevention Wellness Initiative, staff are trained and required to implement Project Success (Schools Using Coordinated Community Efforts to Strengthen Students) substance use prevention programming.

Maintain as applicable, communication with school administration, counselors and teachers about student progress and overall program services.

Respond and provide crisis counseling supports to students on caseload; and within the OESD region when called to respond to a school needing crisis counseling support.

Provide effective parenting strategies to family members to support student’s success and to encourage healthy choices.

Refer and connect youth/students to appropriate community resources and services (i.e., substance abuse and mental health treatment, AA/NA or other support groups, mentoring, tutoring, clothing, health care, food, housing, transportation).

May develop, create, and present information or assist in the coordination of such events (i.e., adolescent substance use/behavioral health warning signs and symptoms) to school staff parents and local community partners.

Participate on the Building MTSS Leadership/Student Assistance Team and in the implementation of the school’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports which includes:

Facilitating social-emotional and physical well-being
Strengthening family, school, and community partnerships
Increasing access to instruction
Promoting a positive school climate
Collaborating and consulting with student centered decision making.

Maintain confidential files, perform accurate recordkeeping, and data collection; submit data/reports timely.

Uphold and assist in enforcing administrative regulations and board policy.

Participate in professional development trainings/classes.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Bachelor’s or Associates degree with 5+ years of job-related experience is required; Master’s preferred (in Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or Youth Development).

Experience working in education, human services, prevention, mental health, or combination of experience in stated areas preferred.

Experience conducting support groups and presenting to youth and adults preferred.

Experience working with and collaborating with community agencies.

Have or qualify for WA state license in mental health, social worker, chemical dependency professional; or psychologist or Washington ESA school counseling, social worker, psychologist certificate; or WA State Certified Prevention Specialist or eligible to receive certification. If applicant does not hold any licenses or certifications listed above upon hiring, employee will be required to obtain a WA State Agency Affiliated Counselor License.

Must follow Dept. of Licensing laws and regulations related to Washington State Professional Counselors and/or Professional Education Standard Board requirements from ESA, as well as ethical guidelines established by National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Center.

Valid WA State Driver’s License.

Full vaccination against Covid-19 or an approved medical or religious exemption that can be accommodated.

Knowledge of childhood and adolescent development, the impact of adverse childhood experiences, and proven youth prevention/intervention strategies.

Must have skills for use of software applications, including MS Office apps, Google apps, and video conferencing.

Must be able to implement with fidelity the model/program requirements.

Must have crisis intervention counseling skills.

Must exercise confidentiality, and display professionality, loyalty, and integrity.

Ability to work flexible hours.

Ability to work and function as a team member.

Ability to travel; reliable transportation; appropriate auto insurance.

Physical Requirements

Significant: sitting, talking, vision, hearing, use of phone, lifting up to 10 pounds

Frequent: standing, walking, driving, repetitive motion, lifting up to 20 pounds, use of computer, looking at computer monitor, moderate noise levels

Occasional: handling paperwork, climbing, kneeling, squatting, crawling, reaching above the shoulder, lifting up to 25 pounds, carrying, pushing/pulling, use of calculator, color vision, peripheral/depth perception, ability to adjust focus

Sick Leave: Full-time and eligible part-time certificated and classified employees will earn sick leave at the rate of one day per month worked not to exceed twelve (12) days per fiscal year. A day of sick leave shall equal average daily scheduled hours. To earn sick leave, an employee must have at least 10 compensated days in the month. Sick leave is front-loaded.
