Position Overview:

The Executive Farm & Commercial Underwriter evaluates Farm and Commercial applications for new and renewal business and requested changes for adherence to company guidelines, degree of risk, and potential for profitable results. This position entails frequent communication with claims, customer service, policyholders, agents, and other interested parties to obtain information, identify problem areas, determine appropriate action, and communicate and explain underwriting decisions. This is GIA’s highest level underwriter position and as such manages a more complex book of business and serves as a resource for less experienced staff.

Responsibilities:

Analyze underwriting data (claims history, reports, and risk assessments) to evaluate new and existing businessApply underwriting judgment to approve, modify, or decline policies within your authorityManage renewals and policy changes, determining whether to continue, adjust, or end coverageCommunicate decisions clearly with agents and insureds, including requesting information and explaining risk factorsProvide recommendations to improve risk quality and take action based on responsesPartner with internal teams to address policy, payment, and risk-related mattersReview and report on large losses to support ongoing risk evaluationBuild strong relationships with independent agents and agenciesContribute to training efforts and share underwriting expertise with colleagues and partnersCollaborate with leadership on strategies and programs that drive profitable growth

Qualifications:

Required:

Bachelor's degree and six years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experienceIn depth knowledge of underwriting guidelines and underwriting philosophyExtensive knowledge of Farm and Commercial coverage forms, exclusions, pricing, structure, and rating. Knowledge of and ability to comply with all state or other regulatory agency’s laws, guidelines, and regulationsExcellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to effectively communicate with agents, insureds, mortgagees, lien holders, vendors and others through frequent written and telephone communication. A majority of communication takes place over the telephoneProficiency in use of computers, including skills in Word, Excel, and email system and proficiency in the Company’s operating systemsAbility to work well with people and promote teamwork.Good interpersonal and customer service skillsAbility to multitask and effectively and independently prioritize and manage complex workload while exhibiting very sound judgmentOccasional travel to agencies and events within assigned territory. Some overnight travel may be requiredDeals with confidential information and/or issues using discretion and judgment

Preferred:

Relevant insurance designation such as Associate in General Insurance (AINS), Associate in Personal Insurance (API), Agribusiness & Farm Insurance Specialist (AFIS), or Associate in Commercial Underwriting (AU).
