At the Seattle Institute for Biomedical and Clinical Research (SIBCR), scientists seek new ways to improve the health and well-being of Veterans through research and education conducted at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS). SIBCR’s research spans a broad range of areas such as mental health; neuroscience; diabetes, endocrinology and nutrition; prosthetics; oncology; age-related diseases; and, pulmonary diseases. We are seeking a Research Assistant for Drs. David Au and Lucas Donovan in the VA HSR Centers of Innovation (COINs)

Summary:

The Clinical Research Assistant will work as a key team member on pulmonary studies based at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System Center of Innovation, including trials sponsored by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) and/or the American Lung Association Airways Clinical Research Centers (ACRC) – see below for links to these studies. This position requires an individual who understands the principles of scientific investigation and clinical trials and is capable of in-depth understanding of the study protocol. The candidate must possess strong scientific, organizational, and interpersonal skills. The position is full-time, Monday through Friday, with potential for hybrid in-person/telework after training period. Travel between the Seattle VA Medical Center and American Lake VA locations may be required. Salary will be based according to the applicant’s research experience and includes benefits.

Responsibilities may include:

Provide daily operational support.

Assist/provide support to recruitment, screening, enrollment, consent, and follow-up of clinical trial participants according to study protocols, including:

reviewing medical charts for eligibility, outcomes, and adverse events
conducting study visits
administering questionnaires
measuring vital signs including height, weight, and blood pressure
timely and accurate data entry
preparing participant mailings
tracking study activities
conducting and transcribing qualitative interviews
communication with study participants and medical professionals

Prepare/distribute meeting agendas and notes

Assist with:

Database and/or electronic data capture system maintenance
Stakeholder and DSMB meeting preparation
Report preparation
Manual of Operations maintenance

Requirements Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

BA/BS in scientific or health related field
Human subjects/clinical trial research
Outstanding organizational and communication skills
Keen attention to detail
Ability to work in a collaborative team environment
Research compliance regulations
Microsoft Office applications

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

Electronic medical record systems
Electronic data capture systems, e.g. REDCap
Clinical health care
1-2 year health service research experience will be given preference

Conditions of Employment:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

Physical Demands:

Ability to stand, walk, and move within clinical, laboratory or office settings for extended periods.
Ability to sit for prolonged periods while performing administrative duties, data entry and coordinating study activities.
Adequate manual dexterity and fine motor skills for handling documents, operate computers, and use basic medical or research equipment.
Ability to perform repetitive tasks such as data entry, filing, and documentation with accuracy.
Ability to reach, bend, crouch, stoop, and handle materials as needed in office or clinical environments.
Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) with study participants, healthcare professionals and team members.
Visual acuity sufficient for reading and reviewing detailed documents and electronic records and entering and verifying data accurately.
Capability to lift, carry, and move items up to 25–30 pounds, including study materials, equipment and supplies.
Ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when required in clinical or laboratory settings.
Rare or occasional climbing or balancing (e.g., using a step stool to access files or storage areas) may be required.

Work Environment:

Work is primarily conducted in a combination of office, clinical, and/or research settings.
Work is typically performed during regular business hours, with occasional early mornings, evenings or weekends depending on study schedules or participant availability.
Requires the ability to travel occasionally for study visits, meetings, conferences, training, or vendor coordination.
Work may require regular interaction with study participants, patients and healthcare providers as well as cross-functional research teams.
Work may involve exposure to biological samples (e.g., blood or tissue) and clinical environments with standard healthcare-related risks.
Noise levels are typically quiet to moderate, depending on office, lab, or field setting.
Must have access to reliable internet connection for remote work.
Must have reliable transportation to travel to work sites.
