Full Job Description

Position Overview

Under general supervision, the Student Success Navigator provides proactive, holistic academic advising and student success coaching designed to promote student persistence, completion, and career readiness. Navigators serve as primary student success partners within assigned Meta Majors or academic pathways, guiding students from onboarding through program completion or transfer.

The Navigator fosters student ownership of educational planning while helping students understand academic requirements, institutional policies, and career pathways. Through intentional outreach, early alert intervention, and relationship-based advising, Navigators support students in overcoming barriers and achieving academic and personal goals.

Student Success Navigators contribute to SFCC’s commitment to Guided Pathways, Comprehensive Student Support, and data-informed retention strategies, while creating an inclusive and welcoming environment that supports diverse learners.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Academic Advising & Student Success Coaching

Provide proactive academic advising aligned with assigned Meta Majors and program pathways.
Assist students in developing and maintaining individualized academic and career plans.
Guide students in prerequisite sequencing, course selection, and degree progression toward completion.
Support students in understanding academic standing, probation requirements, and institutional policies impacting progress.
Promote student self-efficacy, decision-making skills, and long-term educational planning.

Retention & Intervention

Monitor student progress using institutional technology platforms including Starfish and Experience (formerly mySFCC).
Conduct outreach related to early alerts, progress reports, referrals, and student success indicators.
Identify at-risk students and coordinate timely interventions in collaboration with faculty and campus partners.
Support students experiencing academic or personal barriers through coaching, referral, and follow-up.
Participate in departmental or program-based student success teams when appropriate.

Student Systems & Technology Support

Educate students on effective use of college technologies including:
- Experience student portal
- Canvas
- Degree planning and registration systems
Maintain accurate advising documentation and student interaction records.
Utilize data dashboards and reporting tools to guide outreach and caseload management.

Pathway Navigation & Career Planning

Assist students in exploring career and transfer opportunities aligned with academic programs.
Support transfer planning, workforce entry preparation, and goal clarification.
Encourage engagement in co-curricular and career exploration opportunities.
Connect students with campus and community resources supporting academic persistence and career readiness.

Collaboration & Institutional Engagement

Collaborate with faculty, program coordinators, Financial Aid, Registrar, Accessibility Services, TRIO, and Student Services departments to support student success.
Participate in orientation programs, enrollment initiatives, and student success workshops.
Contribute to Guided Pathways implementation and continuous improvement initiatives.
Support institutional retention and completion goals through coordinated outreach efforts.

Caseload Management

Maintain an assigned student caseload within designated Meta Majors or student populations.
Prioritize proactive communication and structured outreach throughout the academic year.
Use data-informed practices to manage student engagement and persistence strategies.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required.
Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated commitment to student-centered practices.
Ability to interpret academic policies and apply them consistently.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office/365 and student information systems.
Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accurate documentation.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in academic advising, coaching, retention, or student services in higher education.
Knowledge of student development theory, Guided Pathways, or intrusive advising practices.
Experience using early alert or student success technologies.
Understanding of financial aid implications related to enrollment decisions.
Experience working with diverse and non-traditional student populations.
Experience with customer service, education, or human services.
Experience with community college advising, enrollment services or student success.

Education

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred in Education, Counseling, Social Sciences, Student Affairs, Business or related field.

Faculty are not eligible for vacation due to built-in contractual time off but have access to 2 personal days/year.
