Full Job Description

SHR Talent is partnering with a healthcare client in San Antonio, TX in its search for a Director of Emergency Services. This permanent, onsite leadership opportunity is ideal for an experienced emergency nursing leader who is passionate about advancing patient care, operational excellence, and clinical quality within a high-performing acute care hospital. Reporting directly to the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), the Director of Emergency Services will provide strategic and operational leadership for one of the busiest emergency departments in downtown San Antonio while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and exceptional patient outcomes.

The Director of Emergency Services will oversee all clinical, operational, financial, and personnel functions of a high-volume Emergency Department that treats approximately 50,000 patient visits annually. The department currently includes 29 Emergency Department beds, with expansion plans underway, and is supported by approximately 100 team members, including Nurse Managers, Clinical Nurse Coordinators (CNCs), EMS Technicians, and multidisciplinary clinical staff. This leader will be responsible for driving quality improvement initiatives, optimizing patient throughput, strengthening employee engagement, maintaining regulatory compliance, and supporting continued growth within the department.

The ideal candidate is a collaborative healthcare leader with a strong background in emergency nursing leadership and acute care operations. This individual will partner closely with physicians, executive leadership, and interdisciplinary teams to enhance patient satisfaction, improve clinical outcomes, develop high-performing teams, and ensure the Emergency Department continues to deliver outstanding, patient-centered care.

Responsibilities:

Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Emergency Department, ensuring safe, efficient, and patient-centered emergency care while maintaining exceptional clinical quality and operational performance
Lead, mentor, and develop nursing leadership and clinical staff by fostering employee engagement, accountability, professional development, and a collaborative team culture
Drive quality improvement initiatives through evidence-based practices, regulatory compliance, patient safety programs, patient throughput optimization, sepsis performance initiatives, and continuous process improvement
Oversee departmental financial performance, including budgeting, forecasting, labor management, staffing, productivity, equipment planning, and cost containment while maintaining high-quality patient care
Collaborate with physicians, executive leadership, and interdisciplinary teams to improve patient experience, strengthen emergency services, support departmental growth initiatives, and ensure compliance with organizational goals and regulatory standards

Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
Master's Degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or a related field preferred
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Texas or ability to obtain Texas licensure prior to employment
Minimum of 1 year of leadership experience in an acute care Emergency Department required; 3+ years of progressive Emergency Services leadership experience preferred
Demonstrated experience leading Emergency Department operations within an acute care hospital environment
Strong knowledge of emergency nursing operations, patient throughput, quality improvement, trauma services, regulatory compliance, Joint Commission standards, budgeting, staffing, physician collaboration, and performance improvement initiatives
Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, improve patient outcomes, drive employee engagement, and successfully manage operational and clinical performance in a fast-paced Emergency Department
Excellent leadership, communication, financial management, organizational, relationship-building, and critical thinking skills with the ability to influence positive change across all levels of the organization
