DIRECTOR, PUBLIC WORKS
Occupation Code: 955.130-010 OCCUPATION SUMMARY:
Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in operating and maintaining equipment in wastewater (sewage) treatment and disposal facility; operates sewage treatment, sludge processing, and disposal equipment in wastewater (sewage) treatment plant to control flow and processing of sewage; Plans and directs all activities of the public works department:
Task Statements which may be considered Essential Function(s):
Directs activities of workers in power generating, grit removal, pump and blower, and sludge filtration departments.
Tests sewage and water supply to prevent contamination, using chemicals and testing equipment.
Inspects equipment, such as pumps, sediment tanks, filters, and chlorinators to detect malfunctions.
Confers with engineering personnel and directs workers in repair and maintenance of machinery and equipment.
Monitors control panels and adjusts valves and gates manually or by remote control to regulate flow of sewage.
Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gage readings and tests results to determine load requirements.
Starts and stops pumps and engines to control flow of raw sewage through filtering, settling, aeration, and sludge digestion.
Maintains log of operations and records meter and gage readings.
Prepares and recommends annual budget for Public Works Department, in consultation with Town Administrator; presents proposed budget to council.
Responsible for all monies allocated to the Public Works Department.
Directs operation and maintenance activities of two plants and five lift stations; performs all tests for DHEC and EPA reporting.
Maintains all records for Wastewater-Treatment Plants.
Responsible for monitoring all systems to prevent interruption of operations; includes daily sampling, heavy maintenance and processing and disposal of sludge.

May operate and maintain power generating equipment to provide electricity for plant.
Performs any work deemed necessary by the Town Administrator, Mayor, or Town Council.
Performs supervisory duties as necessary.
Installs and unclogs sewer lines and constructs taps. Builds manholes/inverts.
Hauls sludge and cleans sludge beds. Provides assistance to Water Department. Responsible for clearing right-of ways. May inspect vehicles.
May perform housekeeping and grounds-keeping duties.

Must possess associated degree in engineering or related field and 4 years of public works experience.
Must possess Class "A" License from SCDHEC.
Must receive continuing education units every year.
Must have over 2 years up to and including 4 years of laboratory and supervisory experience.
