Full Job Description

At Riemer Eye Center, we are are seeking an experienced, motivated, and detail-oriented Billing Manager to lead our billing department from our Ludington office. This leadership position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of medical billing operations, ensuring timely reimbursement, supporting compliance, leading the billing team, and working collaboratively with physicians, leadership, IT, and our EMR vendor to optimize billing processes.

The ideal candidate is an experienced medical billing professional who enjoys leading others, solving problems, improving processes, and ensuring exceptional accuracy and customer service.

Position ResponsibilitiesLeadership

Lead, mentor, and support the Billing Team while promoting accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Monitor department productivity and accuracy.
Assist with training and development of billing staff.
Work collaboratively with physicians, managers, and administrative leadership.
Partner with the EMR software company and IT support to ensure billing systems, workflows, and user access remain functional and efficient.
Assist with implementation of software updates and workflow improvements.

Billing & Revenue Cycle

Review, assess, and process medical and surgical claims.
Enter medical and surgical charges into the Practice Management System.
Submit electronic and paper insurance claims daily.
Perform End-of-Day balancing as assigned.
Process all medical records release requests.
Obtain and secure required medical documentation requested by insurance carriers.
Ensure correct diagnosis and procedure coding is submitted.
Monitor claims for missing or incomplete information and resolve discrepancies promptly.
Follow up on unpaid insurance claims and patient balances.
Manage collections on outstanding accounts.
Stay current on insurance regulations, payer requirements, coding changes, and reimbursement updates.
Complete work within established departmental standards and timelines.
Respond professionally to patient billing questions and insurance inquiries.
Maintain strict confidentiality of patient and company information.
Assist other departments and locations as needed.
Perform additional duties assigned by leadership.

QualificationsRequired

High School Diploma or GED.
Minimum 3 years of medical billing experience utilizing an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Practice Management System.
Strong understanding of insurance billing requirements, claim submission, collections, and reimbursement processes.
Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
Strong communication and customer service abilities.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to motivate and develop a team.
Strong computer proficiency and ability to learn new software systems.

Preferred

ICD Coding Certification (ICD-9/ICD-10 preferred).
Postsecondary education in Medical Billing, Medical Terminology, Health Information Management, or related field.
Experience billing both professional and facility claims.
Ophthalmology or specialty practice experience preferred.
