Summary

The Town of Shrewsbury, a full-service local government known for innovation, collaboration, and exceptional public service, is seeking an Assessing Technician to join our high-performing Assessing Department.

This is more than an administrative position—it's an opportunity to build a rewarding career in municipal assessing. You'll gain hands-on experience in both office operations and fieldwork, developing a well-rounded understanding of property valuation and local government. From collecting and maintaining property data to assisting with exemptions, abatements, and public inquiries, you'll play a key role in ensuring fair and equitable property assessments that support essential Town services.

Key Responsibilities:

Conduct residential property inspections for cyclical revaluations, recent sales, and building permit updates; maintain property records, sketches, photographs, and assessment data.

Research and process real estate sales, tax abatements, exemptions, and personal property accounts, ensuring accurate records and compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Administer the MGL Chapter 61 property classification program, including application review and annual renewals.

Manage commercial and personal property accounts using the RRC database and assist with lot splits, addressing changes, and other property record updates.

Coordinate real estate and personal property tax commitments, including assisting with quarterly tax bill preparation in MUNIS and collaborating with the Treasurer/Collector, Accountant, and other departments.

Calculate and administer sewer, water, and street betterments, maintain related databases, prepare commitment documents, and coordinate payments with the Town Collector.

Prepare Board of Assessors meeting notices, agendas, and minutes.

Provide exceptional customer service by assisting property owners, taxpayers, builders, developers, and other stakeholders with assessment information, abatements, exemptions, and related inquiries via phone, email, and in person.

Requirements:

Associate’s Degree with 3-5 years of related experience in appraisal, assessment valuation, construction materials, or market analysis; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Proficiency in MUNIS, Microsoft Office, and Google Suite is strongly preferred.

Experience with Vision CAMA, GIS, and DOR Gateway systems is highly desirable.

Municipal government experience is a plus.

Work Environment:

Typical office setting with regular interruptions for public inquiries.

Fieldwork inspecting properties, both residential and commercial, both occupied and under construction, in all weather conditions.

Field inspections may involve navigating varying terrains and performing light physical tasks such as stooping, crouching, walking, lifting up to 10 pounds, and using tools like measuring devices and digital cameras.

Occasional lifting of objects up to 30 pounds may be required.

Frequent interaction with the public, town employees, mortgage companies, and tax services.

Must have a valid Massachusetts driver’s license.
