Department Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Chief Academic Officer, the Director of Instructional Support is responsible for the administration of the department, as well as providing leadership for the designing, planning, development, implementation and monitoring of all instructional and operational support to the Division of Academics. The incumbent of this position will guide, assist and support personnel with the School Information System Course Catalogue, administrative procedures, textbook procurement processes, facilitation of summer opportunities programs, coordination of state and federal reporting, serve as operational liaison to other departments in the system, and manage all course and book requests from all schools. The Director will also provide leadership to the staff in planning responsive improvements within the department that are directly correlated to established goals and will seek innovative program approaches, evaluate programs for continued success and seek ways to expand opportunities. The Director will work on projects provided by the Chief Academic Officer and will practice a collaborative approach to program implementation and growth.

Detailed Description

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Leads collaborative efforts with Associate Superintendents, Directors, Coordinating Supervisors, and Supervisors on comprehensive program/course planning, development, overall facilitation, and management (including grants) for summer school programs and the selection and implementation of resources to support curriculum across the Division of Academics;
Oversees the coordination and strategic evaluation of instructional programs and resources for classroom implementation, ensuring alignment with division goals for all content areas;
Leads the approval process for instructional programming courses, ensuring content alignment with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), academic standards and districtwide objectives for all content areas;
Provides strategic leadership in the development of course catalogs for each school, ensuring all facets of instructional programs are supported by an updated, approved set of courses to include online requests;
Directs the review, approval, acquisition and distribution of textbook materials and both print and non-print resources, ensuring these materials effectively support both staff and students;
Oversees the development and implementation of systems for textbook inventory management and training at schools, ensuring operational efficiency and accountability;
Develops and manages the department's budget; monitors expenditures with regard to instructional program maintenance, development and program improvements as well as facilitates the development and implementation of grants that support instructional programs;
Oversees the writing and dissemination of communication documents and maintains a healthy branding process for all programs;
Drives ongoing collaboration within the Division of Academics and with other departments and divisions across the district, focusing on strategic planning, problem-solving, and the continuous improvement of academic processes and procedures;
Provides high-level leadership and oversight in supervising assigned staff, including conducting performance evaluations and fostering a culture of accountability and professional growth;
Collects and analyzes data to make informed and data-driven decisions; and
Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Extensive knowledge, expertise, and strategic understanding of major content areas, with the ability to support and lead initiatives across those disciplines;
Demonstrated ability to engage diverse stakeholders and communicate effectively at all levels of the organization;
Understanding of current research and emerging trends in educational support areas, with the ability to apply this knowledge to drive academic operational improvements;
Comprehensive knowledge of state standards, Maryland College and Career Ready Standards, assessments, alternative assessments, and the resources required to effectively implement and support these frameworks;
Extensive experience in personnel and program evaluation, with the ability to lead performance improvement efforts, lead large projects and ensure the effectiveness of programs and staff;
Ability to use system thinking to establish clear goals for the development of all instructional and operational supports and processes in order to impact academic and instructional programs district-wide;
Exceptional written and oral communication skills, combined with advanced technology proficiency to lead, communicate and innovate within a dynamic educational environment; and
Ability to work with other school systems and secondary education institutes to support innovation in programming.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Master's degree from an accredited college or university in curriculum and instruction, administration or a closely related field required; Doctorate degree preferred. A minimum of ve (5) years of instructional experience and three (3) years of administrator experience required.? Previous experience as a Principal and/or central administrator preferred.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Holds or is eligible for a valid professional license in Administrator I (historical) or Supervisor of Instruction, Assistant Principal, or Principal issued by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE); Administrator II endorsement preferred.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversees and provides guidance and direction to the unit staff.
