At FUNctional Kids, our pediatric therapists provide rehabilitative and habilitative services to children with a variety of emotional, physical, neurological, pathological, cognitive, or developmental deficits. We are seeking to add another occupational therapist to our team!
We strive to provide the most effective treatments for children while meeting family needs through flexible, mobile-based services. FUNctional Kids offers therapy in a variety of settings, including a state-of-the-art clinic with 7 treatment rooms and two sensory gyms equipped with rock walls, climbing tunnels, monkey bars, multiple-swing hooks, and more. Our services primarily involve individual therapy but may include enrichment or therapy groups, as well as co-treatment opportunities. Collaboration is central to our approach; we work closely with families, local play therapists, and other professionals to ensure comprehensive care.
Essential Roles and responsibilities
Team member:

- Uses professional literature to make informed practice decisions.

- Starts and ends treatment sessions on time.

- Provides direction, training, and assistance to interns and volunteers assigned to the occupational therapy program.
- Attends staff and in-service meetings.
- Maintains professional competency by attending continuing education applicable to the specific patient population treated.
- Presents 1 inservice per year to clinical staff.
- Presents on any Continuing Education classes attended to clinical staff.
Completes evaluations:
- Performs quality evaluations to determine the child’s functional level.
- Evaluates a child’s level of function relative to age in such areas as fine/gross motor skill development, sensory motor integration, sensory modulation, social skills, emotional regulation, executive function, oculomotor skills, perceptual skills, self-care and ADLs.
- Completes written evaluation within a 3 day period on proper forms/templates.
- Evaluation contains the requirements needed for medical insurance reimbursement including history, current status, evaluations completed, areas of strength and deficits, medical diagnosis and treatment codes, summary, recommendations including home programming, measurable goals, signatures and dates.
- Evaluates a minimum of one time/year in the clinic to establish new goals and updated plan of care.
Administers Treatment:
- Implements and administers therapy programs to restore and enhance performance using selected activities and specialized equipment.
- Develops individualized intervention plans to reach reasonable, measurable, and specific goals.
- Selects and implements therapeutic interventions to enhance a child's performance based on the intervention plan, modifying the environment as needed.
- Able to actively engage child through the use of play as a treatment intervention
- Monitors child’s progress through observation and consultation with other professionals to determine the effect of the intervention and need for continuation, modification, other referrals, or termination of services.
- Provides ongoing home program handouts that are effective and appropriate for child/parent understanding.
- Coordinates and collaborates on treatment options and advocates to enhance patient's social support systems.
- Documents intervention services daily on daily progress note and maintains administrative records in accordance with state guidelines, clinic policy, school policies (when in the schools), and reimbursement standards.
- Participates in multi-disciplinary team meetings and collaborates to communicate client progress.
- Maintains inventory of therapeutic equipment and projects for re-ordering and budget planning.
- Complies with departmental safety precautions/procedures for self and child
- Utilizes all equipment appropriately and safely per established protocols, manufacturer's guidelines, and competency checklists.
- Maintains therapeutic use of self for best practices with the child and family.
- Completes timely patient progress reports and information needed to continue or request services.
Patient discharge:
- Promotes the discharge of children due to improved level of function and works to eliminate drop-outs.
- Integrates discharge planning early in treatment based on continuing assessments and achievement of treatment goals and objectives.
- Completes a discharge summary.
- Documents follow-up and termination of services.
Basic Job Requirements:
Education:
- Successful completion and graduation from an accredited Occupational Therapy Program recognized by the NBCOT and completion of all fieldwork requirements.
Experience:
- Minimum of one year of experience as an Occupational therapist in pediatrics or field experience in a pediatric setting.
- Experience working with children of special needs.
License, Certification, Registration:
- Initial certification as an Occupational Therapist by the National Board of Certification of Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).
- Current South Dakota Occupational Therapy License.
- National Provider Identifier (NPI) required prior to employment start date.
Additional requirements:
- Knowledge of Occupational therapy theory and practice, principles, and evidence based practice.
- Knowledge of human development birth-21 years.
- Ability to articulate the role of occupational therapy in the evaluation, intervention planning, and in the intervention process.
- Ability to analyze, select, adapt, and sequence relevant occupations and purposeful activities to develop and support intervention goals.
- Ability to recognize occupational performance deficits in the areas of: personal care, client roles and habits, processing skills, social interaction, play skills, written communication, and ability to follow tasks and routines for role performance.
- Ability to articulate the influence of socio-cultural, socioeconomic and diversity factors on a child or student’s occupational performance.
- General knowledge of federal, state, local legislation, regulation, policies and procedures that affect private practice and school occupational therapy services.
- Proficiency in conducting at least 2 evaluations in pediatric clinic-based setting which include both standardized testing and structured clinical observations
- Skills in effective oral and written communication
- Ability to maintain a safe environment, and use equipment and materials safely.
- Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.
- Demonstrate adaptability to new people, procedures, and situations.
- Willingness to be educated and trained for specific program implementation (Includes training program and mentoring).
- Show Initiative, strong work ethic, and the ability to positively interact and collaborate in a team environment.
- Ability to work well with coworkers, families and clients.
Physical Demands:
- Moderate physical effort (lift/carry/push up to 45 lbs).
- Sitting on the floor, in chairs of a variety of sizes, and on a variety of surfaces.
- Frequent lifting and carrying of supplies and/or equipment in and out of bins, on/off shelves, and over your head.
- Frequent attaching and adjusting suspended equipment on ropes and carabiners over your head.
- Frequent reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, squatting, crouching, standing, walking, manual dexterity and mobility.
- Need to quickly change positions to maintain a child in a safe environment.

Pay: $63,702.00 - $97,640.00 per year
