Full Job Description

A local client is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Book Design & Production Specialist to join their creative production team. This role is ideal for a design professional with a passion for typography, layout design, and creating visually compelling print and digital publications.

As a key member of the publishing workflow, you will collaborate closely with editorial, marketing, and production teams to produce high-quality books that are visually engaging, reader-friendly, and production-ready across both print and digital platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

Design and format interior layouts for a wide range of books, including novels, textbooks, curriculum, and specialty publications.
Create compelling and marketable book cover designs that resonate with target audiences.
Ensure proper typesetting, spacing, and font choices to create readable, visually appealing content.
Work with editorial and production teams to incorporate text, images, charts, and other elements seamlessly into book layouts.
Create and utilize layout templates to ensure consistency and improve efficiency across multiple projects.
Adjust and fine-tune layouts and cover designs based on editorial feedback, ensuring consistency in style and design across all projects.
Prepare print-ready and digital files for submission to printers and eBook platforms.
Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of design trends, publishing standards, and best practices in book production.
Collaborate with marketing and editorial teams to ensure that cover designs align with the brand and marketing strategies.
Manage multiple projects simultaneously while adhering to deadlines and project timelines.
Implement time management strategies to optimize workflow and ensure timely delivery of all projects.
Ensure that layouts and cover designs meet the technical specifications required by printers and digital platforms (e.g., Ingram Spark, Amazon KDP).

Qualifications:

Exceptional attention to detail with a focus on accuracy and accountability.
Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with external partners.
At least 3 years in design experience, preferably in related market.
Proven experience as a book designer, cover designer, or in a similar role within the publishing industry.
Knowledge of current trends in book design, typography, and formatting standards.
A portfolio demonstrating previous book layout, typesetting, and cover design work.
Strong proficiency in Adobe InDesign, InCopy, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Microsoft Office Suite.
Familiarity with typesetting principles, typography, and layout design.
Experience with both print and digital book formats, including knowledge of ePub and PDF standards.
Excellent attention to detail, with a focus on quality and accuracy.
Strong time management skills and the ability to develop and follow efficient workflow processes.
Experience in creating and using layout templates to streamline production processes.
