DEPARTMENT: RECREATION AND PARKS

JOB TITLE: MAINTENANCE WORKER IV

COMPENSATION: GRADE 10/STEP 8 - $22.41 HOURLY/$46,613 ANNUALLY

WORK LOCATION: WORCESTER COUNTY RECREATION CENTER, 6030 PUBLIC LANDING ROAD SNOW HILL,

MARYLAND 21863 WITH TRAVEL TO OTHER RECREATION CENTER LOCATIONS WITHIN
WORCESTER COUNTY

WORK SCHEDULE: 1:30 P.M. TO 10:00 P.M. THURSDAY – MONDAY
*DAILY HOURS WILL VARY DUE TO FACILITY USE. THE SCHEDULE WILL INCLUDE HOURS DURING

THE DAY, EVENING, AND WEEKEND BASED ON TOURNAMENTS AND PROGRAMS.

APPLICATION PERIOD: UNTIL FILLED

Job Summary: Under supervision of the Recreation Facility Superintendent, schedules, performs, and oversees
various custodial, maintenance, and construction tasks in the Recreation Center as well as other concession stands
and restrooms that are operated by Worcester County Recreation & Parks.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Safety Sensitive position requiring Drug and Alcohol Testing

Essential personnel subject to emergency call-back with little or no notice
Will be called in to assist with snow removal or storm damage
Possession of a valid driver’s license, and a motor vehicle history with less than 4 points (MD).
Successfully pass pre-employment background check
Must be available to work during the day, evening, and weekend

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Accountable for the general appearance of the recreation center, surrounding grounds, park restrooms and

concession stands

Performs general cleaning duties such as sweeping, waxing and buffing of floors, cleaning windows, doors,

cleaning and sanitation of restrooms including refilling of dispensers etcetera as considered industry standard
practice for commercial buildings

Collects and disposes of trash and wastepaper
Performs preventative and general maintenance on building systems and makes minor repairs and/or

adjustments

Assists with the installation and removal of a portable dasher wall and various other types of gym equipment to

prepare gymnasium for a variety of activities

Identifies, reports, and corrects safety issues throughout the building
Operates and maintains gas/diesel powered, electrically driven, and/or hydraulically operated

equipment/machinery. Makes minor repairs to machinery/equipment and vehicles

Operates with various floor machines; ride on floor scrubber, push behind floor scrubber, floor buffer/floor

polisher and automatic hand scrubber

Performs and may lead others to perform various semi-skilled and skilled labor tasks. Operates and maintains

a variety of hand and power operated tools

Assists with inventory of custodial materials and supplies and making purchase recommendations
Strips and waxes facility floors and polishing of gym arena floor
Mows grass, uses line-trimmer, and removes debris from property as needed
Maintains trees, shrubs, and flowers
Perform cleaning of Concession stands weekly during months of operations. Assists in cleaning and opening of

the concession stands for the season and deep cleaning for winterization at the end of the season

Performs cleaning of restrooms located at County Parks during months of March through November
Directs part-time custodial staff; oversees work duties, creates daily tasks, assists in scheduling as needed
Directs trustees; discusses needs with Recreation Facility Superintendent, picks-up and drops-off trustees,

monitors work and assigns tasks as needed

Must be able to always maintain confidentiality and a professional attitude

Cross-trains and back up other staff as needed
Completes assigned tasks accurately and by established deadlines
Establishes and maintains harmonious working relationships with co-workers, elected or appointed officials,

and the public using tact, discretion, sound judgment, and professionalism

Complies with the safety programs, procedures, training, fire drills, COOP plans, etc.
Ensures confidentiality of information and records and complies with record retention schedule
Complies with the Worcester County Government Personnel Rules & Regulations and safety programs
All other related duties assigned by the Recreation Superintendent

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

Maintain a valid driver’s license and driving record of less than 4 points (MD)
Basic knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, electricity, HVAC components, and maintenance/repair of small

equipment

Basic knowledge and experience with floor buffer, floor scrubber, wax spreader and hydraulic jack
Ability to perform manual physical labor including frequent walking, bending, stooping, lifting and carrying heavy

objects up to 50 lbs., and the operation of vehicles, tools, and equipment

Basic knowledge of the operation and function of tools, equipment, and vehicles used in the maintenance of

building operation.

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions; read street signs; keep records and logs; complete written

forms; and to communicate effectively with the public. Ability to apply acquired knowledge to increasingly
varied and complex tasks

Ability to perform duties independently and as part of a team and the ability to complete assigned tasks by

established deadlines

Basic computer skills are desirable

(Rarely (<5% of the time), Occasional (5-25% of the time), Frequent (25-75% of the time); Constant (<75% of the
time)
Frequent viewing and lifting over 20lbs; Occasional talking, hearing, carrying, pushing, pulling, lifting and moving of
objects over 50lbs; Rarely over 80lbs. Known hazards include risks associated with impacts, heat, chemicals, and
sharp objects; work in extreme and/or inclement weather conditions.

Paid Time Off

Full time employees can accrue up to 248 hours of paid time off in the first year of employment
starting on the first full pay period. This includes up to 80 hours of vacation, up to 120 hours of sick,
and up to 48 hours of personal leave. The accrual for vacation increases after 6 years and 11 years.
Unused vacation and sick leave can be rolled over annually as outlined in the policy details. Full
time employees are granted 15 paid holidays in calendar year 2026.

Medical Benefits

Full time employees are eligible for medical, dental, vision, flexible spending account(s), and
AFLAC voluntary plans on the first day of the month after date of hire. Please visit our on-line

Full time employees are eligible for county paid life insurance and long-term disability insurance on
the first day of the month following six months of employment.

Retirement

All employees budgeted for 500 hours, or more will automatically participate in Maryland State
Retirement effective on the date of hire, if not already retired from a Maryland State Retirement
system. All employees are eligible to participate in a deferred compensation plan that offers pre-tax
and ROTH contribution options. The county provides a $1 for $1 match of employee’s contributions
up to a maximum of $1,500 per fiscal year as outlined in the plan documents.

Part Time Employees

Part time employees are eligible to participate in the deferred compensation plan on the first day of
the month after date of hire. Part time employees are eligible to earn 1 hour for every 30 hours
worked of sick leave (up to 64 hours). Sick leave can be taken after a 106-day waiting period.

Extras for All Employees

All employees are eligible to use the Fitness Room at the Worcester County Recreation Center at no
cost. All employees have access to an Employee Assistance Program that provides telephone
consultations and up to 3 face-to-face visits per year. All employees are eligible for SECU credit
union membership.
