Safety & Training Manager - Utility Distribution
Permanent Hire- REMOTE - $120K, Benefits- 401K -Vehicle- Geographical Restrictions are- Michigan to Pennsylvania and South to Northern Florida. Basically- you must live in the Eastern Time Zone
Travel: 90% multi-state
The Utility Safety & Training Manager is responsible for the daily administration and implementation of the company’s Safety Management Plan to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements promoting a safe and healthy work environment.
Requirements:
1. Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in construction, utility, safety, hazard recognition, accident investigation, and root cause analysis
2. Electrical and/or Natural Gas
3. Working knowledge of applicable electric utility pole standards and work practices
4. Working knowledge of state and local DOT requirements
5. Demonstrates effective communication skills, capable of managing multiple projects, has strong training and interpersonal skills- Classroom & Field Training
6. A positive disposition demonstrates passion, integrity, and responsibility
7. Basic computer competency with Microsoft Office products and ability to learn client systems as required
8. Familiar with Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) measures, programs, and procedures
9. Possess a safety designation from the following list, Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP), Construction Site Safety Technician (CSST), Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technicians (OHST) OR Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (CSST)
Typical Responsibilities of the Electric Utility Distribution Safety Manager:
1. Visit multi-site work locations daily to review safety with crews, including Job Hazard Analysis JHA's, hazard recognition coaching, strengths, opportunities to improve, and corrective actions needed to enhance safety awareness for everyone associated with work in the field
2. Maintain record-keeping systems including OSH metrics and KPIs
3. Participate in and lead Safety Observation Program
4. Participate in and lead behavior-based Human Performance Program
5. Recognize hazards, perform risk assessments, and provide recommendations to eliminate or mitigate identified hazards
6. Supervise a team of Quality Control Inspectors responsible for performing random audits or data driven audits on pole inspections
7. Establish and manage quality inspection schedules based on job size, geography, and client expectations working with the General Manager and based on QC Data Reports.
8. Prepare technical reports
9. Coordinate and perform training in all OSH topics
10. Participating in Bid Events
11. Participate in and lead Emergency "Response" Action Plan
12. Participate in and lead in accident investigations, reporting, and injury illness case management
13. Assist with traffic control plan development and implementation
Preferred Credentials & Experience:
1. Certified Utility Safety Professional Certification (CUSP)
2. OSHA 500 plus expertise in Safety Training
3. PowerSafe Training
4. Minimum of 6 years of experience in electric utility transmission and distribution operations
Training and Workforce Development:
- Oversee onboarding and safety orientation for all new hires.
- Develop and deliver recurring training modules (e.g., fall protection, defensive driving, pole climbing, pesticide handling, confined space, etc.).
- Maintain training records and certifications for all employees.
- Work with management to identify skill gaps and create targeted development plans.
- Observe and evaluate the effectiveness of on-site and hands-on training sessions across field teams.
- Work with Supervisors and QC personnel to ensure crews are working safely and effectively.
- Work with crews to make sure each crew member has the understanding and supplies for his job and crew
