Full Job Description

Position: Education & Volunteer Coordinator

Immediate Supervisor: Director of Education

General Description: The Education & Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for providing tours of the Oliver Mansion and Worker’s Home, assisting in educational programming for Kidsfirst Children’s Museum, and overseeing tour reservations for The History Museum and Studebaker National Museum.

Employment Type: This is an in-person, full-time, nonexempt position, typically 9:00am-5:00pm Monday through Friday with occasional special events on evenings or weekends.

Responsibilities:

Conducts tours of the Oliver Mansion and Worker’s Home.
Assists in upkeep and interpretive programming for Kidsfirst Children’s Museum.
Responds to all tour inquires; schedules all school and group tours for The History Museum and Studebaker National Museum.
Creates and distributes itineraries for each school and group tour prior to the museum visit.
Greets school and group tours upon arrival and provides a brief orientation of the Museum Campus, reviewing the Itinerary previously sent.
Serves as primary point of contact for scheduled groups during their visit.
Provides support for volunteer operations, including tracking information, communications, continuing education, and coordinating outings.
Schedules docents and volunteers for tours and other programming needs using an online calendar, email, and phone calls.
Maintains reservations and contact information with clients and volunteers in the NEON system.
Maintains accurate information in the museum’s internal calendars for staff and volunteers.
Communicates regularly with docents regarding upcoming volunteer opportunities (primarily via email).
Assists in the operations of the Education Department.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree preferred.
A strong candidate will have an interest or experience in teaching and/or managing groups of people.
Organized, detail-oriented, and methodical problem solver. Manages multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
Self-motivated and enthusiastic. Can work independently or supervise a team of volunteers. Flexible and enjoys a varied work environment.
Enthusiasm for history and learning.
Able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; can present ideas clearly and professionally to colleagues and to the public.
Good computer skills; able to use Microsoft Office suite
Stand, walk, lean, bend, sit, stoop, kneel, crawl, reach, push, pull, lift, grasp, feel, and utilize repetitive motions.
Occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays.
Occasionally subject to environmental conditions such as heat, cold, wind, humidity, dust, and campfires
Lift up to 25 lbs
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

About the History Museum

The History Museum began in 1867 as the Northern Indiana Historical Society. It is the second oldest and second largest historical society in the state of Indiana, with a mission to preserve our region’s heritage and educate the public through our collections, exhibits, and programs to develop an informed understanding of the past. The museum’s scope includes the twelve counties of the St. Joseph River Valley and tells the area’s diverse history through its nine galleries, three historic homes, and over 600,000 artifacts.
