Job Summary: Island Exterior Fabricators is seeking a Metal Sander to prepare fabricated steel, aluminum, and curtain wall components for painting, coating, assembly, and shipment. This hands-on role is responsible for sanding, grinding, blending, and finishing metal surfaces to meet company quality standards and production requirements. The ideal candidate has experience working in manufacturing or fabrication environment, demonstrates strong attention to detail, and is committed to producing high-quality finished products while maintaining a safe and organized work area.
Key Responsibilities:
- Sand, grind, and prepare fabricated steel, aluminum, and curtain wall components for painting, coating, assembly, or shipment.
- Remove weld splatter, burrs, oxidation, scratches, and other surface imperfections to ensure a smooth, quality finish.
- Blend welded joints and prepare metal surfaces in accordance with engineering drawings, work orders, and production specifications.
- Inspect fabricated components for surface defects and ensure finished materials meet company quality standards.
- Operate hand tools, pneumatic sanders, grinders, polishers, and other surface preparation equipment safely and effectively.
- Work closely with welders, fabricators, painters, and Quality Control personnel to ensure components are production-ready.
- Maintain production schedules by completing assigned work accurately and efficiently.
- Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment to ensure safe operation.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while following all company safety policies and PPE requirements.
- Assist with material handling and other fabrication or finishing duties as assigned by the Steel Shop Manager.
Skills and Experience
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- 1+ years of experience in metal fabrication, manufacturing, finishing, or a related industrial environment preferred.
- Experience using hand tools, sanders, grinders, polishers and other surface preparation equipment.
- Ability to read work orders, and basic fabrication drawings.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety.
Hourly range: $18 - $25
Location: Calverton, New York [Onsite]
Schedule: Mon-Fri 6:00am-2:30pm or 2:00pm – 10:30pm

ADA Requirements: The position requires the ability to stand for extended periods, lift and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds, and work in environments that may involve bending, climbing, or exposure to heat and sparks. Proper PPE will be provided to ensure safety.
