Mechanical Designer
Location: Spartanburg, SC
Department: Engineering
Reports To: Director of Engineering
Employment Type: Full-Time
Position Summary
LEL International is seeking an experienced Mechanical Designer to join our growing engineering team. This position plays a critical role in designing custom generator enclosure systems, structural steel assemblies, and related industrial equipment.
The ideal candidate is a highly skilled SolidWorks user who can transform engineering concepts into complete, fabrication-ready designs while collaborating closely with mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, and project management teams. This individual should be comfortable working independently, identifying opportunities for design improvements, and supporting products from concept through production.
If you enjoy solving real-world engineering challenges and seeing your designs built in a manufacturing environment, we'd like to hear from you.
Primary Responsibilities
- Design and model custom industrial equipment using SolidWorks.
- Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and fabrication drawings for manufacturing.
- Develop complete drawing packages, including Bills of Material (BOMs), weld details, and assembly documentation.
- Design structural steel weldments, sheet metal components, platforms, stairs, ladders, and mechanical assemblies.
- Generate manufacturing files, including DXF files for laser cutting and fabrication.
- Collaborate with engineers to develop practical, cost-effective solutions that meet customer requirements.
- Review designs for manufacturability, serviceability, and ease of assembly.
- Support Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and drawing revisions.
- Work closely with production, purchasing, and quality teams to resolve design and manufacturing issues.
- Participate in design reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assist in developing and maintaining engineering standards, templates, and best practices.
- Occasionally support field measurements and existing equipment documentation.
Required Qualifications
- Associate or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, Drafting, or a related technical field (or equivalent experience).

- Experience creating or modifying electrical drawings (not required, but considered a strong asset).
- Familiarity with PDM or document management systems.
- Working knowledge of AWS welding symbols and fabrication standards.
- Familiarity with GD&T principles.

- Enjoys solving manufacturing challenges.
- Has excellent attention to detail.
- Can balance multiple projects and deadlines.
- Works well with engineers, production personnel, and customers.
- Continuously looks for opportunities to improve designs and processes.
- Is comfortable spending time on the manufacturing floor to understand how products are built.
